gap (pre-track) tab in cd ripper.

Hi, I've just noticed that I have not activated the Gap (Pre-Track) tab in CD Ripper (as I have just reformatted my computer) I have ripped about 100 CDs so far and wondered if this had any effect on gapless detection when not using it. is there any difference in a rip if it is selected or not? or is it just available to show you what the gap is?
