    File names too long.

CD Ripper has created some files with names so long that Windows (7 Pro 64) can't deal with them. I get the message:

"The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation."

However, I can't delete them, rename them, or move them.

Can batch converter be set to shorten or truncate the file names?

How do I prevent this in the future?

Internally we limit to 260 chars length for the filename, it should not be possible to go beyond this. Install the utility codec 'Audio Info' and convert one of these files to this codec please.

Which version of dBpoweramp do you use? R14.4? what was your naming string in CD Ripper?

The problem seems to be showing up on FLAC files converted to MP3s. I am using 14.4 but one of the problem areas was from 14.0. I downloaded "Audio Info". How do I use it?

If the problem is only with the converted MP3 files, is there any way of shortening their names. I can't do anything with them in Windows.

Here is the info for one of the files:

This one is 275 in length, this path it is on a local hdd? because if you had:

            E:\Data Backup\2013_01_07-18_00_35_B1\Data

            on a network share as

            \\aserver\share\

then dbpoweramp would write at 260 based on that path.

I see the problem. The path was generated by my Network drive's backup routine. I can fix that. Is there any way to use Batch Converter to reduce the length of file names?

Also can CD Ripper be set to limit the length of file names to something less than 260?

                Re: File names too long.

You would need dBpoweramp R15 (in beta) and Arrange Audio Codec (latest in beta also), then use Batch Converter, convert all to:

                [MAXLENGTH]220,[origpath]\[origfilename][]

                Test on one file first.

It is possible to use MaxLength also in CD ripper, however if you have very long folder names, it is possible to crop the length so the folder name is the filename...

Long Path Tool help me a lot when i have an issue like file deleting or renaming the file. Also good to use if file name and file extension is too long.

AFAIK in Windows 10 (Anniversary Update) one can enable NTFS Long Paths (here is the way to go for the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14352). Can R16.1 handle long paths?
