    Ripping Copy Protected CDs

    Hallo!
I can't rip CDs which report "Copy Protected" on the sleeve. dB reports over 11000 frames to be re-ripped, which is not possible because the cds are practically new. Also desabling Ultra Secure doesn't help. So I suppose that dB has a problem with protected discs. Are there some tricks that I could use?
    Thank You!

Yes, the 'Defective by Design' mode.

Thank You, it worked. Still I'm a little confused because dB says of every Track "Not in AR". Well...it's hard to believe that neither Queen's, Norah Jones' or Joss Stone's Albums are not in AR :( How comes? Did I get an accurate rip?

P.S.: I let the options "Force Read First TOC Session" and "Interpolate C2 Errors" activated.

I can only guess this is a kind of copy protection which intentionally destroys the error correction on the CD, forcing the player to interpolate every time. The rationale is that ripping software shall get stuck (like you experienced). Additionally, there might be a few 0.5s -- that is, the pits are so close to midway between 0 and 1 that they will sometimes be read this way, sometimes the other. (It does not ruin the music -- you only need a few every now and then, and for example, HDCD also destroys a few bits by its own flagging and nobody hears the difference.)

        Side-effects are
        - the CD gets destroyed much easier, as there is much less reliable correction data
        - likely, there is nothing such as an "accurate" rip for these, as two reads are different.

Now I do not know how the AR database works for these (for all that I know, Spoon might behind the scenes have some rules that returns this answer -- these CDs are easily detectable in the database, if they have a hundred submissions and all are different). But that does likely not deprive you of anything you could have had -- there are CDs where AccurateRip is simply useless, because by design the CDs won't be read "accurately" neither by your CD-ROM drive nor by your standalone hi-fi CD player.

But there are other protection schemes that are quite inefficient, where it is in fact possible to get the same bitstream as someone else did.

As long as you do not know which copy protection scheme is used: trial and error.

You might get lucky and have someone who has ripped the same disc with the same cd drive and have a ar verification, otherwise this cd gives different results to different drives, the nature of the disc, there is perhaps no such thing as an accurate rip with an intentionally damaged cd.

What does "trial and error" mean? Is that an option?

Depending on the drive, having C2 error detection enabled may give false positives on copy-protected discs. Disabling C2 may allow an accurate (or secure) rip.

No, this just means manually, ripping with one setting, see what happens, rip with another setting, see what happens, etc. That is, try something, see if it works, if it doesn't, try something else.
