    Rip Error + Compression

    Rip Error
Information ripping to [Multi Encoder], 'Track 14' to 'C:\Users\xxxxxxx\Music\Guns N' Roses\Greatest Hits\14 Guns N' Roses - Sympathy for the Devil.IGNORE'
** Aborted: Have to ReRip 579 Frames, Re-Rip Limit Set to 100 Frames
    Track 14: Ripped LBA 322562 to 356729 (7:35) in 1:19. Filename: C:\Users\xxxxxxx\Music\Guns N' Roses\Greatest Hits\14 Guns N' Roses - Sympathy for the Devil.IGNORE
    Insecure [Pass 1, Ultra 1 to 2, Re-Rip 579 Frames]
    Insecure [Pass 1, Ultra 1 to 2, Re-Rip 579 Frames]
** Aborted: Have to ReRip 579 Frames, Re-Rip Limit Set to 100 Frames

    - In my ignorance, do I just need to reset ReRip to something like 600 Frames and it will work ?
    If this is true,
    - why (setup guide suggests 100) ?
    - can it remain at 600 for the rest of the ripping I intend to carry out ?

    Compression
I had ripped 3 CDs to this point and the ALAC copies have taken 1.2 GB, which is way over what I thought it would be.
    - Is there a setting within dbpoweramp I have missed that will compress ? I intend to 1) copy FLAC files to a memory stick, and 2) 'import' the ALAC files in to iTunes on to a 16GB ipod touch. I have over 200 albums to rip....

    Re: Rip Error + Compression

600 is lots of frames, it is very likely that the disc cannot be ripped without error. You are welcome to set it to 600...it could take lots of time and still not rip correct, hence why we have a limit at 100 in the guide.

ALAC is lossless like FLAC, you will get a 2:1 compression, that is about 350MB per CD.

For an iPod you might want to rip to m4a Nero (AAC) which is a lossy format (and will be 4 to 8x less size)

      Re: Rip Error + Compression

I retried the CD with the number of frames increased to 600. It worked (winner !!). As you might now expect from me , some further questions however:
      1) I have downloaded the m4a Nero AAC Encoder Release 1 (assuming this is correct). m4a Nero (AAC) now appears in the drop down to select, but when selected it tells I need a separate component off the nerodigital website. I have looked for the component and have failed. Can you tell me the exact location and name please ?
      2) can you advise what I should check for 'Target', select as 'Quality' as well as what I should select from the 'Encoder' dropdown for this format please ?
      3) I had (rather foolishly) been told that I could store 4000 songs to a 16GB ipod. I rather foolishly also thought that Lossless files eg FLAC would be of similar size (how much I have learnt in a short space of time !). The purpose of the FLAC files was for a repository. Having seen the size they output to, and that zipping the files/folder makes little difference, I am thinking of aborting the FLAC idea and just outputting to a lossy Apple format, ie AAC. Comments/suggestions on the FLAC abort ?
      4) in my ignorance, what is the difference between AAC you can import to using iTunes and the m4a Nero (AAC) format you are recommending ?
      5) have you recommended m4a Nero (AAC) on the basis that quality of sound is retained, but compresses better than AIFF, for example ?

Thanks for your continued support and patience. I'll get there.....!

        Re: Rip Error + Compression

Why would you NOT want to have a lossless archive (e.g., FLAC). Storage is cheap, and you can also create a lossy version to use on your ipod. If you only rip to lossy, you'll never be able to properly transcode those files to some other type codec or size. But with lossless (FLAC), if a new codec comes along that allows one to get transparent lossy files at much smaller size, you'll be able to click a few mouse buttons and have a whole new library of files using the new lossy codec. And you may start out (as I did) only worried about have your music on an ipod, but this may develop into having a whole-house music system based on a file server and networked music players (as I have now). And for the home system, having lossless (FLAC) files is very nice.

Bottom line: Rip to FLAC as archive. Then create a lossy mirror directory of these to use on ipods, etc.

The current location is detailed here, we have yet to update on our side:

The url for downloading Nero's AAC Codec package only leads you to Nero's product page. :( The actual url is: http://www.nero.com/enu/technologies-aac-codec.html. ;)

            Thanks guys.
I have downloaded nero 1.5.1 (somewhere in the thread it mentions latest is 1.5.4 ?).
Do you have any answers to the other questions ?
            Again, many thanks.

Regarding question 2) I found elsewhere on the net that someone recommended Quality = VBR, .95 400kbps (although this can go up to 1.00/425kbps ?), no forced profile. Any comment ?

                Re: Rip Error + Compression

I would guess that around 225Kbps is transparent to most people, on a portable player, anything above this is fine.

                  Re: Rip Error + Compression

I use LAME VBR -V2 (which averages about 192kbs). I find this transparent for me. If you're under 30, that could be different (as you haven't suffered from age-related high frequency loss as much yet). Why not install foobar2000 and the ABX component and you can test for yourself at what level files are no longer transparent.

                    Spoon/Gary,
Thanks for the continued advice. You are talking to a mere novice at this end. Just dotting the i's and the t's (I hope).
                    - am I right in thinking the 1.5.1 version is correct (rather than there being a 1.5.4 which I have seen mentioned on other threads) ?
                    2) can you advise what I should check for 'Target', select as 'Quality' as well as what I should select from the 'Encoder' dropdown for this format please ?
                    - given that I am looking for quality with high compression (and I am over 40 :smile2, do I set VBR ? as close to 400 as I wish, and no forced profile (don't know what the difference is between them all) ?
                    3) I had (rather foolishly) been told that I could store 4000 songs to a 16GB ipod. I rather foolishly also thought that Lossless files eg FLAC would be of similar size (how much I have learnt in a short space of time !). The purpose of the FLAC files was for a repository. Comments/suggestions on the FLAC abort ?
                    - Gary, going to do FLAC and m4a Nero AAC
                    4) in my ignorance, what is the difference between AAC you can import to using iTunes and the m4a Nero (AAC) format you are recommending ?
                    - still don't know

                    - looking at other threads it looks like AIFF doesn't compress all that well (?)

Sorry to be persistent. Your help is greatly received.

                      Re: Rip Error + Compression

Sorry, I've confused you. I don't use AAC (m4a) files for my lossy. I use mp3 files in itunes (thus the LAME MP3 -V2 reference). AAC has something similar, but since I don't use AAC, I can't really speak to the options you have there. I was only pointing out that, for me, a target bitrate of about 192 is transparent on my portables. Again, not critical, because these files are not my main files....my primary files are lossless FLACs used in my home system.

AIFF is not compressed. For smaller files for use on portables, you should use AAC (m4a) or mp3. Given that you have lossless FLAC, you can always easily redo the lossy (aac,mp3) files at a later date if you decide you want more/less compression.

If you look in the help file for the m4a Nero (AAC) encoder (start >> programs >> Music Converter >> dBpoweramp Music Converter >> Help)

it shows the exact filenames and where they should be installed.
