    Problem extracting tags from cd

    Hi,

I am trying to rip some of my earlier burned cd's but something goes wrong when dBpoweramp tries to get the meta tags from the discs. I am sure that my cd's contain cd-text, but for some reason it does not extract all info. See screenshot below. I tried playing with settings but cannot fix this myself.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you.

Sure there is CD-Text for all tracks? There are sometimes errors even there. What is reported by other utilities, e.g.
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-...-Manager.shtml ?

Try meta drop menu >> retrieve from >> CD Text

        Thanks both.

I am sure that there is CD-text for all tracks and these are visible with the CD-text manager program. Also tried the meta drop menu >> retrieve from >> CD Text, but no luck.

However, after clicking the META button a couple of times over appr 15-20 minutes, titles for more tracks appeared. The artist field for all those tracks was however filled with the name of the artist of the first track. Also with the 'compilation' box checked.

Other suggestions? Should I uncheck the other META sources? Or perhaps fully de- and reinstall DBPoweramp? I already updated to the latest version. Or is it more likely that there is an (compatibility) issue with my cd/dvd drive?

If it is a unique disc you have made, the tags must be loading from CD-Text, why they stop, I am not sure, can you send me a copy of this disc? if you are able to contact me by PM and I will forward an address.

It might also be worth trying other CD/DVD drives to see if the symptoms remain the same. In addition to sending a/the copy of the disc to spoon.

              Thanks again.

I have the problem with more (self burned compilation) discs.

Just tried again with a friends' external cd/dvd drive as per bhoars suggestion and using that it works like a charm. So I guess my cd/dvd drive is the culprit? I have an LG GH24NS90. Will update the firmware now and let you know if this did the trick.

Firmware update did not change the situation. However there is 'improvement': When I repeatedly click the Meta and/or Refresh buttons (most of) the other track and artist names appear. But this can take several minutes. Not really looking forward to having to do that all the time so other thougths would be much appreciated.

Spoon: if you still need a copy of the CD for research, let me know. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, did you set the 8KB transfer size option in the secure ripping sub menu (for either drive)? I doubt this would have an impact, but, again, I've been surprised at some behaviors of drives/firmwares/bridge chipsets/operating system device drivers/etc., esp. when it comes to assumptions about buffer sizes/alignments.

If it is intermittent, it is unlikely to be a software issue, rather hardware.

The 8KB transfer size option is unchecked (I guess this is the default setting), see screenshot below.

Ok, I know I'm stepping a bit on Spoon's support here, and he's probably right that the issue is a buggy drive.

But try setting the 8KB setting on and then seeing if the CD-Text works on that first drive. It's unlikely to make a difference. It may just be that that drive is doing something wrong in general. But worth the 30 seconds to test.

Hmm...oops, I'm assuming the 8KB buffer size is enforced for all interactions, not just C2 enabled reads. If not, then just ignore me entirely.

Are there other applications out there that can read CD-Text? I see there's a plug in for WMP here: http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/inde.../wmpcdtext.htm via here http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...howtopic=56780

Playing with the 8KB and C2 settings didn't work either. I'll buy a new cd/dvd r drive. Do you have suggestions or is any drive of a major manufacturer fine?

Thanks again both for your help.

Nothing specific. Word on the net is that if the drive doesn't specify CD-Text there's another way to check: any drive that supports CD+G discs (aka Karaoke-CD discs) should also support CD-Text discs.

Googling. Right, for example a list that hasn't been updated for a while, but also links to other karaoke-related sites that have drive lists: http://www.tricerasoft.com/drivelist.html
