Finding missing metadata?

Is there a way to automatically add metadata that is missing or wrong (Windows media player had a search function years ago that would allow you to enter the artist/album and select the album you were ripping)?

I purchased the software after trying it out, have ripped a couple hundred of the cds in my collection over the last few months and have found a couple that the data is wrong in all sources (Jethro Tull - A Passion Play showed up a jazz album) or no data available (Crackerhead - cranial contusion).

Is there a way to get dBpoweramp to look for the data other than the "meta" button?

I have googled this and trolled this forum but have found next to nothing - I had a third cd that got the correct info when I unchecked all the internet options under "meta" and checked the cd ones - on advice I found in one of my searches during my trial period.

I tried manually adding the artist and album and then clicking the meta button but the wrong info comes back - from what I read here this is what should happen.

I also tried manually adding the data and then searching for album art but it shows no results.

The majority of cds show up correct so I think my rip settings are ok.

Over the years I have purchased a lot of music from all over the world (mostly eBay but also from internet web sites) so it's possible the cds giving problems are some kind of bootleg that has the wrong info on the cd itself.

I too have more than the average number of obscure disks. Not that this is a direct answer to your question but I find that Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/) is helpful. It has some predefined search sources, but, more importantly for me, it also lets you customize the things you are searching for which often gets results after a few tries. Also its ability to import meta data using patterns allows me to easily use text I cut from various internet searches. dbPoweramp, foobar2000, mp3tag, CUETools and Album Art Downloader (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/album-art) (and to a lesser extent MusicBrainz Picard) have complementary features and by using them together there were only two albums in my entire collection for which I needed to type in metadata.

Manually type it in as you are doing, but DON'T hit the metadata button after, that will just get what you corrected back.

Discogs is a great source, and I keep harping on spoon to add it to perfectmeta!

Thanks for the replies; to be clear my problem wasn't finding the metadata - it's readilly available - but adding it without having to manually type it into the separate fields.

From what I have been able to find ripping 100's of cds over the last couple of months - both playing around with dB and randomly googling inquiries when I was annoyed typing in the info - there is no way to automatically add the data.

What sources have the meta-data readily available? dBpoweramp pulls meta-data from 5 different meta-data sources that are each quite comprehensive. I frequently find errors in 1 or 2 of the sources, but its exceedingly rare that I find a disc without any sources of data.

Perhaps saying all the metadata is readily available is misleading. I'm talking about the artist/album/title/album art information, all readily available with a google search - the examples from my first post - Jethro Tull and Crackerhead - are not obscure albums but dB returned either wrong info or none at all. In this case I would like to somehow type in the artist and album name and have the rest of the metadata or a list of possible matches returned.

I also have a number of bootleg/official fan club releases/promo cds that may be somewhat rare but google for the most part finds many sources of info - NOT - as I seem to have indicated above - in a proper metadata file; I then type this info into the dB metadata fields, save the album art I want in a file and add it in dB from that file (or copy the names from the cd and scan the album art) - if these were the only types of releases that needed me to manually add the info I would have assumed the metadata was unavailable (and for some I'm sure it is) and not started this thread.

I assume my problem is the cds that give me trouble have incorrect/corrupted/missing data to start with (although the music plays ok) and the dB sources can't find proper info because there is an incorrect starting point.

Years ago I ripped my collection to mp3 with Windows Media Player, back then it had a option to click that allowed you to enter the artist or album name and it would search for and return a bunch of results that you could choose from to add to the file of the cd being ripped - much like dB's <choose art> button shows a variety of results and you can click on the one you want.

are you ripping from original CDs or burned CDs? If the CDs are not original then they may not match whats in the databases and there is not current way for dBpoweramp to look them up easily.
