Does anyone have an opinion on the future of the music CD? How much longer will it be used as a means to distribute new music? I have seen some artists now selling smart cards with music on them. Also have read reports reailers plan to go this route at some point.
Do others see the CD on it's way out? That said obviously that will be the end of ripping new material.
I see a couple of problem with it's disappearance unless solutions arise.
1. What will be the sound quality of those files? I assume they would MP3?
2. What will be the options who can use their CD to rip to whatever format (FLAC, WAV, etc...) and at the desired bitrate of their MP3. Some reatilers have said MP3 is now sold at 192-256K.
3. Certainly there will be diehards who want a physical medium as a backup.
