Does drive drive support C2 errors?

Hi I have a brand new Dell XPS 8300, and it has a HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GH70N cd/dvd drive. When I test for C2 support it reports an error immediately, which I think means no C2 support? Can someone tell me if this is correct - i.e. do you know if this drive does supprt C2, so I can update my settings?

    Thanks a lot,

    Martin

If reports an error straight away then it suggests it is not supported.

Its a brand new PC & drive - could there be a fault do you think or is this quite normal?

      Thanks

even a brand new drive can not support C2 very well or at all. It is not a fault, just a fact about that drive.

When I ran the test on my new LG External Super Multi DVD Rewriter (GE24LU20), I never did get an error message. I assume that means that the drive does not support C2 error reporting.

Also, when I run Cachex.exe it reports a 2048 KB cache which does respond to Plextor's FUA command. However, when use dbpoweramp to detect a cache it reports none. What Ultrasecure settings should I use, if any?

No drive AFAIK has a 2048KB audio cache, I would use NO FUA, and 1024KB cache.

Re: Does drive drive support C2 errors?

Why would the latest version of Cachex.exe consistently report 2048 if that's not possible?

If the drive supports FUA, why not use it? Or is that positive report probably wrong?

                  Both probably reported wrong

                    1. As far as I am aware, only some Plextor drives support FUA.

                    2. Also, on the LG drive that never gave an error on the C2 test - did you used a scratched CD or a clean one? The C2 test requires a significantly scratched CD (while the other tests require a clean CD).

                    3. The C2 test seems to have three possible results:

                    a) it returns immediately regardless of CD (clean or scratched), indicating that the drive doesn't handle even getting requests for C2 pointers, so you should disable C2.
                    b) it scans the whole scratched CD and reports no error, indicating that it accepts the requests for C2 pointers, but does not actually report them back, so you should disable C2.
                    c) it scans the scratched CD up to the point of a significant scratch at which point it stops and reports a C2 error. In this case, you can try enable C2. Note: some drives give good C2 data, some give mediocre C2 data and some give misleading C2 data. You'll need to experiment to see if the C2 data helps or doesn't.

On the C2 test I used a CD with a blackened triangle as suggested in the setup guide. I assume I come under "b)", and should disable C2 reporting.

                      Thanks.

                        Correct. Cheers.
