    Dfference in Confidence

    Good day,

Something that I did'nt understand with a cd which has not the same crc & confidence but with the same cd player.

As external there is a confidence of 13 where in internal there is only 4.
Ripped on an other drive and again 13
Why rhere is only 4 with the same Plextor but as internal drive ?

1st rip PLEXTOR PREMIUM 2 as external drive / usb / windows 7 / laptop

    Re: Dfference in Confidence

Are you sure you're using the same version of dbpoweramp/accuraterip?

I see two differences of note:

Notice how on the 2nd Rip, the "(CRCv2)" text is missing from that line, even though it's matching the fa9aae5e CRCv2 confidence 4 value (not shown in my excerpt)? It makes me think perhaps you're running different versions?

      Re: Dfference in Confidence

Thank you Brendan for your answer and ... welcome back to the forum !

Yes it is the same version 14.2 installed on the laptop and on the pc.

Btw, I have tried with the Plextor as external drive / usb on the computer and I have a confidence of 13 (CRC32: 53F426AA AccurateRip CRC: D4517F1F (CRCv2) [DiscID: 011-0012d96c-00a3f786-950b0f0b-5])

But when the cd drive is mounted as internal (IDE) the result is only confidence 4 (same cd drive / same OS / same dbp/accuratrip version the only difference is external/internal).

      Strange is'nt it ?

What is the best for ripping, the Plextor mounted in internal drive (IDE/XP) or as external drive (USB/Windows 7) ?

What is interesting, and that is in my opinion the cause for the different confidences, is that the plextor, mounted internally, uses a different pressing offset. Why? No clue....

Just one idea, and for that, please go into the configuration of CD-Ripper: what settings did you choose for secure ripping?
Drive Read cache - what does it say there?
Clear read cache with FUA: on or off?
C2 Error points for Error protection??? There is a second chechbox just below that, and that is especially made for USB. Is THAT one checked or not?

I would try to clear and redetect Drive Read Cache and just for testing purposed leave FUA and C2 off, even if Plextor usually does support FUA and C2. IMHO, your readings then should be identical internally, externally and on your laptop.
Then test and in case it's workung, switch on FUA, redetecd Drive Read Cache - it should say "Drive Read Cache = 0" then
          Test again, compare results.

As a last test, switch on C2 and JUST for the external drive, also check the additional "C2 over USB" checkbox, and test again, compare results

So, how will results of the different settings compare to each other?

          What's happening then?

Looks like one or two of your drives was/were configured with wrong offset. It might be the two (if you used the same CD to configure the two).

              Thanks for your answers

The Plextor has the same settings (mounted internally or externally)

              Please find log file :

              Ripping with drive 'H: [PLEXTOR - CD-R PREMIUM2 ]', Drive offset: 30, Overread Lead-in/out: Yes
AccurateRip: Active, Using C2: Yes, Cache: None, FUA Cache Invalidate: Yes
Pass 1 Drive Speed: Max, Pass 2 Drive Speed: Max
Bad Sector Re-rip:: Drive Speed: Max, Maximum Re-reads: 34

              Encoder: FLAC -compression-level-8 -verify

I will do the different test asap

              Thanks again

                Re: Dfference in Confidence

So I have done this evening 32 tests (!!!)

                For resuming :

                Same cd ripped
Same cd drive : Plextor Premium 2

16 tests on a laptop under Windows 7 / connection via usb (external)
16 tests on a computer under Windows XP / connection via ide (internal)

I have tested with FUA / C2 / 8KB transfer / Ultra Secure cases checked and unchecked.

FUA and C2 pointers are supported by this Plextor Drive.

In all the cases the cache was at 0 kb (none)

On the laptop with all the possibilities there is absolutely the same result for all the rips (confidence 13)

Track 5: Ripped LBA 70357 to 87955 (3:54) in 0:09. Filename: C:\Users\Thierry\Saved Games\Terence Trent D'Arby\Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby\05 Dance Little Sister.flac
AccurateRip: Accurate (confidence 13) [Pass 1]
                CRC32: 53F426AA AccurateRip CRC: D4517F1F (CRCv2) [DiscID: 011-0012d96c-00a3f786-950b0f0b-5]
                AccurateRip Verified Confidence 13 [CRCv2 d4517f1f]
                AccurateRip Verified Confidence 53 [CRCv1 d9c880f5]
AccurateRip Verified Confidence 30 [CRCv2 bda56752], Using Pressing Offset +194
AccurateRip Verified Confidence 200 [CRCv1 b5b783ec], Using Pressing Offset +194

On the computer there is two differents results.

If C2 Error Pointers is checked the CRC is different and confidence is only 4.
If C2 Error Pointers is unchecked the CRC is the same and confidence is 13.
If C2 Error Pointers is checked and 8KB transfers also the CRC is the same and confidence is 13 (for memory the cd drive is as internal via IDE so AFAIK 8KB must stay unchecked)

                The log files here-below

                Track 5: Ripped LBA 70357 to 87955 (3:54) in 0:09. Filename: C:\Documents and Settings\Propriétaire\Mes documents\Mes essais\Terence Trent D'Arby\Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby\05 Dance Little Sister.flac

AccurateRip Verified Confidence 21 [CRCv1 1fb5dee9], Using Pressing Offset -677

So I don't know really why when C2 pointers is checked the result is different ?
Is the CD damaged ? (no re-rip frame...)

                ========================================

An other test with an other cd has been effected.
If C2 pointers is checked the rip is mentionned as secure / warning.
If C2 pointers is checked and 8KB transfer also there is no problem.
As the first example, CRC are totally different.

Wow - you did some thorough testing! Only thing, that at the moment I can comment: I remember, that some longer time ago Spoon had advised me to not use the C2-Error-option, even though my drive reported, that it was "C2-capable". He said, that sometimes drives do report that capability, but that it was not implemented correctly or just "fakely" report C2-capability. I cannot comment on the Plextor-drive (they are said to be C2-capable, I know), but your results in my non-expert-eyes suggest to leave C2 off....

The drive is giving out different results if C2 is checked, this should never happen...so points to a firmware issue on the drive.

                      Thanks for your answers

Spoon, firmware has been updated but it is the same situation.

                      A) if C2 pointers not checked, is it very imporant for the quality of the rip ?

                      B) why when 8kb transfer is checked the problem disappear ?

                      C) 8kb transfer should be use only with an usb connection, i am right ?

                        A) Not if accuraterip verifies
                        B) the firmware issue is bypassed?
                        C) No, it is needed normally only for this USB connection

                          B) Yes, I have made the firmware update (V 1.03) this evening.
                          Downloaded from Plextor Web Site.

By the way, what is the best to use the Plextor for you :

                          1) mounted internally in a computer via IDE (under XP)
                          2) mounted in an external case on a laptop via USB (under Windows 7)

Internally, but be aware of different IDE settings in the bios which can upset older drives.

The computer pc is older than the Plextor drive so I do not think there is a problem with this.

So I have bought the same cd of the Stranglers received today (same EAN/UPC code)

Confirmation that it is absolutely the same because crc are identical (and in perfect condition)

And ... I have the same error as the first one !!!

Same track / same re-rip frame / same time ...

I think there is really a problem...
