On what basis do albums get categorized as Compilations?

    Hi

I am using CD Ripper and Batch Ripper. I am filing by "Album Artist" then "Album" and I am using the folder structure string IFCOMP to put albums by "various artists" in to a designated "Various" folder on the basis of whether "Album Artist" is singularly identified by Perfect meta.

I have found a few times that even if an album is tagged with Perfect metadata as the same single Album Artist throughout all the tracks it can still get put into a "Various" folder rather than a folder of the single identifiable Album Artist when the album has a lot of tracks by " "Album Artist" and ....", eg if Paul Kelly is the Album Artist (as defined by Perfect Meta) and Paul Kelly and the Messengers appear as track artists multiple times then the album gets filed as Various, even if "Compilation" is not checked on the meta data check page and all tracks have "Paul Kelly" as Album Artist.

    My naming scheme is

    [IFCOMP]Various Artists[][IF!COMP][album artist][]\[album][IFMULTI]\[Album] - Disc [disc] of [disc_total][]\[[track]] [title] [[album]]

Any thoughts on how to fix this appreciated.

IFCOMP is only acted on if the compilation check box is checked.

That's great thanks Spoon. But in my case the album is getting put in a Various Album Artist folder when the Album Artist is NOT Various but is a know artist. So why would this be happening? How does the software decide whether to put in a Various folder or not? Particularly as in my case IFCOMP is not being invoked since the box is not checked?

      Thanks again Spoon.

Do you mean in the va directory or might you be using squeezebox software for playing and seeing this there. If so this is a different issue.

Does the compilation tick box have a tick in it before you rip the CDs?

No, I mean in Windows Explorer, the folder structure thar CD Ripper builds.

Also the "Compilation" check box is not ticked, so CD Ripper should not think this is a Multi artist album even though it does contain multiple musical collaborations - like I said all tracks have been tagged as a single Album Artist, but CD Ripper has mistakenly put the album in a "Various" Album Artist folder.

            Cheers

Appreciate any thoughts on this oddity of folder naming.

very odd as I haven't seen this problem occur in ripping 1000s of CDs. Are there any "artistsort" albumartistsort tags etc in these files. for example, open with mp3tag, right click, select "extended tags" to see all tags in the file, even some you didn't realize were there. this is probably NOT your issue, but I'm stumped.....\

and your dynamic naming string: I notice it does not end with "[]" ....all my strings seem to end with []. no idea if that is your issue. but it strikes me that your string *has* to have an issue that is causing this location error....
