    Naming help

Hi, I havent ripped any cd's for some time so am a little rusty on the subject of naming, any help would be appreciated.

I have quite a few compilation discs which I would like to rip in a different way to normal due to the way Sonos works. With previously ripped compilations the artist is listed in Sonos under 'Artists'. I now want to rip a collection of Uncut magazine free CD's but dont want to see each artist as there are too many to clutter up my menu.

What I would like to do using naming is change (track)'Artist' to 'Album' and add 'track artist' to 'track title', keping album as album. I would like the result in Sonos to be as follows:

    For this example
Album: Uncut 2003.09: Pick of the Month
    Artist: Warren Zevon
    Title: Disorder in the House

In Sonos I would like to see the following under Artists and Albums:
Artists -> Uncut 2003.09: Pick of the Month -> Warren Zevon, Disorder in the House.
    or:
Albums -> Uncut 2003.09: Pick of the Month -> Warren Zevon, Disorder in the House.

NOT: Artists -> Warren Zevon -> Uncut 2003.09: Pick of the Month -> Disorder in the House.

I think this is possible with naming, please can anyone suggest how, I tried a couple of things but to no avail.

I hope the above makes sense, Thanks.

Naming (file naming) makes no difference to a sonos, as it uses ID Tags.

Album Artist is the one you need to look at to reduce artist count.

Ahh, thnaks for that. Can you give me any advice on what to do to reduce artist count. Would inserting the same thing in album artist for all tracks have any effect ? or is that still playing around with naming ?

Album artist is one artist which is used for the whole album, even though the album might contain tracks which are by different artists.

Because of Sonos' display limitations, sometimes you have to get a little creative with your tags to get things organized the way you want them in Sonos.

If you just have a few compilations, the easiest solution is to use the compilation name as the ALBUM ARTIST. So, in your example compilation, you would set ALBUM ARTIST to "Uncut 2003.09: Pick of the Month." (ARTIST and TITLE would simply be as listed, for each track.) And then set Sonos to "Group using AlbumArtist".

If you do it this way, there won't be separate artist listings for every artist on the compilation....but rather, the album "Uncut 2003.09: Pick of the Month" will appear as an entry in your Artists view.

Obviously, if you have a lot of compilations, this starts to really clutter up your Artist view with a lot of album listings. In that case, there are more creative tagging options to help keep things manageable....but the above approach works fine when it's just a handful of them.
