CD drive no longer rips discs

I have been using dbpoweramp for a couple of months now and have been pleased with the results. Lately my CD drive will no longer rip CDs. I could not find any post that is the same problem as mine. Here is the error info from a recent rip:

Error ripping to [Multi Encoder], 'Track 1' to 'C:\My m4a Files\Jethro Tull\(2003) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album\Jethro Tull\(2003) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album\01 Birthday Card At Christmas.IGNORE'
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 0 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 16186) [clRipperSecure::Rip]

Information ripping to [Multi Encoder], 'Track 1' to 'C:\My m4a Files\Jethro Tull\(2003) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album\Jethro Tull\(2003) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album\01 Birthday Card At Christmas.IGNORE'
    Track 1: ERROR Ripping LBA 0 to 16186 (3:35) in 3:04. Filename: C:\My m4a Files\Jethro Tull\(2003) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album\Jethro Tull\(2003) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album\01 Birthday Card At Christmas.IGNORE
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 0 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 16186)

    Any help would be welcome.

Test to see if another different program can read from the drive, it could be broken.

I tried another program and it would not rip the CD. Looks like I'll be looking for a new drive. Do you have any recomendations for a CD/DVD drive? I have a Gateway MX6453 laptop running Windows XP SP3. Thanks.

You could go for a new internal drive, but I don't think that would be worth it. I suspect that the laptop (running XP) is oldish.

I'd get any of the gazillion perfectly capable external USB drives, assuming the laptop supports USB-2. For ripping CDs, this will work perfectly well, and the somewhat reduced transfer speed shouldn't be a factor (the read-rate should be slower than the transfer potential). If you get a new laptop you can still use the external drive as an auxiliary.

I see that BestBuy in the U.S. sells a wide variety for about $50 each, see http://www.bestbuy.com/site/CD-DVD-D...d=abcat0504007. You can get them for less. Note that all the currently available drives are DVD drives, but these support CD ripping/writing.
