Having fixed all of the fixable quirks I didn't like, I am off and runnng with my switch from Exact Audio Copy to dbPowerAmp.
Only one deficiency remains that would make the application a total slam dunk for my purposes.
I use the Album tag (FLAC and MPs) to identify recorded "works" rather than original compilations. For example, if I have multiple recordings of a Beethoven piano sonata, I format the Album tags for all ten recordings so they list on an iPod, or other limited-display-hierarchy device, consecutively grouped together.
A list of four might appear like this
Piano Sonata No. 25 in G major Op. 77 - Brendel , Alfred - 1961
Piano Sonata No. 25 in G major Op. 77 - Brendel , Alfred - 1976
Piano Sonata No. 25 in G major Op. 77 - Gilels , Emil - 1982
Piano Sonata No. 25 in G major Op. 77 - Schnabel , Artur - 1938
I've done this with other rippers for years by combining other tags. I can use a tag editor to do it also. But it would make the process one step if dbPowerAmp CDRipper would allow the Album tag to be dynamically constructed using other tag elements - to accomplish my format I would use [composition (a custom tag I put just the name of the composition in)] - [artist] - [year].
As is, I have two choices.
A. Split each CD ripping job to multiple sets and change the Album box with each set. For example, if a CD has recordings of three Beethoven piano sonatas, required steps would be
1.Select the tracks for one sonata
2.Rip the selected tracks
3.Select the tracks for the next sonata
4.Change the Album tag to be correct for the new selection
Repeat steps 2-4 until all of the other works on the CD are done
B. Rip an entire CD and use a tag editor afterward to change the Album tags for each work.
