Buy two cheap ones, which have a different offset on accuraterip.com, then you will possibly have better than one expensive one.

Spoon - not sure what 'different offset on accuraterip.com' means? I am finding selection a nightmare - can you suggest two externals?

It means two drives which are different, from different manufacturers, this gives the best chance of reading all possible discs.

What interface (eSata, USP, Firewire) do you prefer?
You might be best off buying one (or two, if you are going to follow Spoons advice) 5.25 inch external enclosures capable of housing optical drives (the Vantec NexStar DX is a great one), which gives you the flexibility to select whatever optical drive you like the most, and replace it down the road without paying the "additional" generally required for an external drive.

                I totally agree.
Even better with SATA/600 (aka SATA III).
I haven't seen any SATA/600 optical drives yet, or external enclosures fro SATA/600 devices.
Anyone else seen any of those yet?
