    Ripping Reference Recording Discs HDCD

I thought I'd bring this up here to see if anyone had expereienced the same, and whether there are any work arounds or not.

I've been trying to rip HDCD discs. HDCD decoder in DSP is set to not shift to upper bits. Encoder is to wave, no compression, all selections are "as source. CD ripper identifies the CDs as HDCD, however, when I rip the files and check properties, the audio files are 16 bit files.

Has anyone encountered this and solved it before? Or is there a problem of data between DSP and the Wave encoder that prevents this?

The wave encoder is set [as source] for the settings?

I cannot explain it, as the HDCD detection actually decodes part of the data. Try converting Wave >> Wave with the HDCD dsp enabled

Rip one track to FLAC without the HDCD dsp (or any dsp effects) and email the wave file to me please.

It has not come through, your email server might reject the size if too large. If so try uploading to something like rapidshare and email the link. Wave or flac, any will do.

It should have done that through "skydrive" hotmail provides. At least that's what it indicated. I'll try again.

I sent the link again, and also to myself in a different account as well. It downloaded fine. File size is 38M

Downloaded the 01 Minnesota Orchestra - Dance Of The Tumblers and converted to FLAC with only 1 DSP effect, HDCD, the resulting flac is 24 bit and the information log after conversion shows that HDCD wa detected. There could be something on your system from blocking the hdcd.exe from running, try disabling any antivirus you have.

I have never converted to FLAC, so I'll give it a try. Normally I have 3 DSP actions enabled, resample to 48000, ReplayGain, and HDCD. I have at least three computers I can try on. Can you post a screen print of the Properties like I have (only that image shack does not always properly show it now).

I used music converter to convert to FLAC and WAV, it ends up as 24bit. So it seems the problem is either somewhere in how the ripper integrates the conversions, or how the DSP action list sequence varies?

Ah, if HDCD comes after the resampling, then it coverts to 16 bits. So it is a sequence issue. But this was not addressed anywhere. Does this mean when we apply all DSP actions, we need to think about the sequence?
