Taking the plunge... any recommendations?

I've finally decided to take the plunge and rip my meagre CD library to lossless. I want to get it right the first time to avoid needless re-ripping and so was hoping for recommendations regarding good optical drives to use (preferably external) and software. Because I use OS X I was thinking along the lines of XLD (I gave the beta Rip a test run but don't trust it because it's still in beta mode and hasn't been updated in over a year). A few questions though, for stuff I'm unsure about: if I use XLD, should I turn on the c2 error correction option even though XLD checks AcuRip? Or should c2 be turned off? Is there anything about external/portable CD drives that is different to internal ones (other than the obvious) that would affect ripping performance/accuracy?

You would have to ask on the cod forum, we can only advise about c2 and dbpoweramp

Thanks for that. In that case, would c2 still work properly on a drive with a USB2.0 interface? Or do external drives (via USB) pose a weakness when it comes to secure ripping? I've looked into dbpoweramp, and have considered making the purchase, but currently don't have access to a (working) Windows machine.

It is down to both the bridge chipset on the usb enclosure and the ripping software.

Do you know of any way that I can ensure that these won't pose a problem before I purchase the drive?

There is no way of knowing unless someone else has tested and published that it works.
