Why does my rip speed go to 40x when I have it set to 4x speed?

I'm new at ripping cds and I have the ripping speed set to 4x (the slower the better I've been told). It starts ripping slow at 6x or 7x but somewhere after the third or fourth song my cd drive starts to speed up and all of a sudden it says its ripping at 40x. Why is this? At 40x I'm afraid its ripping too fast and not doing a good job.
By the way I have the ripping method set to secure, not burst

    Thanks for any help.

    >(the slower the better I've been told)

You have been told incorrectly, modern drives rip worse at lower speeds.

That's the point of the Checksum - if it's correct then the file is ripped accurately. So long as that is right it doesn't matter how fast or slowly the ripping is done.
