Consistent errors in early tracks

I have recently re-ripped my CD collection with dBpoweramp, and I'm running into a thing where lots of CDs rip correctly except for the first track or two.

I'm using a LG drive (DVD-/+RW) drive; I can get the model number if you want.

After going through most of my collection, I have a total of 32 CDs that didn't rip completely correctly but only have a couple (let's say 1-3 errors, though I wasn't exactly consistent with this) tracks with errors:

1. 17 CDs where the only bad track is 1
2. 3 CDs where the only bad tracks are 1 and 2
3. 12 CDs with other bad tracks

I don't think it's a spin-up issue or something like that because when there are only a few bad tracks I've tried reripping just those tracks immediately, before the drive spins down audibly. (They often ripped correctly when I did this; the numbers above don't include those CDs.)

I plan on trying another drive in a couple days, but any idea of other things to look for?

Also, it may be worth mentioning that my drive seems to be really bad for ripping. Out of somewhere in the vicinity of 100 CDs, only about 1/4 of them ripped completely correctly. Some are pretty scratched, but most are almost clean and some are basically pristine.

The settings I have are basically the default settings. No ultra-secure, max read speed, no C2 pointers (I don't know how good the implementation is with this drive). I did set it to 1 sec of spin-up time. The sample offset is +667.

The drive is an LG GSA-H62N.

Drives wear out over time, it could be worth while replacing the drive if you are getting such a high error rate.
