Help needed with Naming when ripping

I have been using a number of different Naming conventions during my CD archiving project and want to settle on just one.

I have been using the default option, but changed it to remove the track number:
    [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Various Artists[]\[album][IFMULTI] Disc [disc][]\[artist] - [title][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[artist] - [album][IFMULTI] Disc [disc][] - [title][]

I am not sure why the track number is needed, can you help explain why?

The real reason I need help is because I want my music to be stored like this:
    Artist
    Album (or CD) Title
    Track Title

Since I have a number of "Various Artists" CDs, using the IFCOMP and IFMULTI options are great. I just want a folder for each Artist, then a sub-folder for each Album that will contain the tracks for that Album.

The default Naming standard places all the tracks into a single folder for each Artists, combing all the albums into one. Can you please explain the logic behind this? Maybe I am doing mine wrong and should convert to this Naming standard, I just understand the logic behind it.

For me, I think it is easy to look for an Artist and then all the Albums for that Artist underneath it. I just want to make sure that my music players (Sonos at home and iPhone for the road) will find all my music in the Naming standard I showed above.

I am ripping into FLAC and then converting into Apple Lossless for the iPhone.

Oh, I stumbled upon a thread that showed the different Naming standards that people use, but I can't find it again. Could that be made sticky? It sure was helpful when I could find it.

    Thanks for your help.

well most like their tracks to show up in track order which is probably why its the default

Personally, I use mediamonkey to re-organize/name files after ripping and post-rip cleanup is done, so the default naming is irrelevant (for me).

      Thanks for the reply Teknojnky.

Can anyone answer my other questions?

Naming is quite a personal setting, one is chosen which should do most people, most of the time. There is no right or wrong.

Understood, but how can I modify this Naming command:
          [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Various Artists[]\[album][IFMULTI] Disc [disc][]\[artist] - [title][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[artist] - [album][IFMULTI] Disc [disc][] - [title][]

So that instead of this output:

          Artist\Artist - Album - Track Title

          I get this output:

          Artist\Album Title\Track Title

I still want to use the basic script above so that the "Various Artists" and COMP discs are handled correctly, I just want to modify it slightly.

          Thanks.

Re: Help needed with Naming when ripping

Thanks for your help Spoon! I just tried your recommendation and this is now what I receive when ripping (each line is the exact title of the directory, the last line is the Track Title):

              [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,Bruce Springsteen,Various Artists[]
              Lucky Town[IFMULTI] Disc 1[]
Bruce Springsteen - Better Days[][IF!COMP]Bruce Springsteen
              Lucky Town
              Better Days.flac

Basically, each song has it's own folder.

Instead of what you suggested, I would like this to instead look like:
              Bruce Springsteen
              Lucky Town\Better Days.flac

Here is a picture of the entire file structure for this CD.[IMG]http://jmhays.smugmug.com/Other/Lonnie/8806744_8DiZd*blooper*1068815180_ywAT8[/IMG]

I would like to have my output like this:

                [artist]\[album]\[title]

but I would also like to add in the Naming structure options like your default script so that the "Various Artists" CDs and Compilation CDs are output in this same structure.

                  Try:

                  [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Various Artists[]\[album][IFMULTI] Disc [disc][]\[artist] - [title][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album]\[title][]

Re: Help needed with Naming when ripping

                      Spoon,
I have run into a slight snag with the naming convention that I have been using. This is what you suggested that I use:
                      [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Various Artists[]\[album][IFMULTI] Disc [disc][]\[artist] - [title][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album]\[track] [title][]

and it works great with only one exception.

I have my CDs broken down into three groups:
                      Normal CDs (Single Artist)
                      Soundtracks
Various Artists (Multiple Artists on same CD, like Motown's Greatest Hits")

The string you built for me (thanks again for that work) works perfectly except for the CDs that are in the Various Artists folder. For those songs, the track number gets stripped away from the song. As an example:
"01 Velvet Underground, The - Sweet Jane" gets changed to "Sweet Jane".

How can I keep the track number after the song gets converted? As I said, other than this minor issue, the current script works great. Could you tweak this script so it will work for all my songs in all the folders?

I would prefer to use a single script to convert all my songs, but if I have to have a seperate script just for the Soundtracks and Various Artists folders, I can live with that.

                      Thanks again for your assistance.
                      Joe
