ReplayGain Question

Hi

I've only read about ReplayGain couple of days ago and started ripping with this. I already ripped 50 more CDs before using ReplayGain and was wondering if there is a utility to ad ReeplayGain to those FLAC files I ripped earlier?

As a total newbie, I am trying to understand exactly what is ReplayGain and the benefits. I understand to a certain extent that it's a volume normaliser and some players do not read the tags?

I am streaming my FLAC files via the Squeezebox Touch. Will I here difference between CDs ripped with or without ReplayGain?

I just found the ReplayGain Utility which will help me with already ripped FLAC files I ripped over the last week or so prior to me starting to use ReplayGain 2 days ago.

I now would like to use the ReplayGain utilty on those earlier rips. The FLAC files are all on my NAS.

My FLAC files are in Music/Artist/Album/FLAC files.

Instead of me having to apply ReplayGain to individual albums, can I simply select an artist folder and let the ReplayGain do it's thing on all the FLAC files with the album folders of the artist?

I am assumming the utility will run over the exiting FLAC files, tag it, that's all? ... meaning there will not be any duplicate FLAC files?

What happens if I use the ReplayGain utility on FLAC files I already had ReplayGain done say one's I did yesterday? Will this double shot of ReplayGain make further changes to the tag?

So you saying if I had 7 albums under the artist folder, if I point ReplayGain to the Artist folder, ReplayGain will do it's magic on all of the 7 albums? There will be 7 folders (album title) with the FLAC files withing those 7 album folder.

Sorry for being thick but I've already ripped over 70 CDs and I am really happy with the results and just want to be sure by applying ReplayGain after ripping and where I should point to, will not muck up of rips :-)

No the same value will be calculated again.

Finally, is there a way I can identify now which CDs I've ripped (earlier lots) that I've run ReplayGain and which I have not? Anything in the Tags to identifiy this?

I also just installed ReplayGain Utility and did a short test. I can only see the 'Convert' option if I use Explorer if I right-click the FLAC file. If I right -click the Artist or the album folder, I do not see the Convert option so I can't run the utility over.

Can I use the ReplayGain Utility in batch form? i.e. right click the album or artist folder and run ReplayGain on 'all' the FLAC files within the album or artist folder? Thanks.

It would probably be easier to RG all the files overnight rather than trying to selectively only RG those with it missing.

I have a related question:

I am going to write album gain and track gain tags to my flac collection using the batch converter. In the replay gain DSP settings, I check "Calculate track gain" and "Calculate album gain" with "Album indentified with album ID tag". Will the converter tell a "Best of" album of one artist from a "Best of" album of another artist with these settings? Or, having the same album name tag, will they be treated as one album and mess up the album gain process? If so, how can I add further identifiers such as the album artist to the DSP settings?

Going to do this with R14 on ~700 albums in flac format.

If the tracks have 'album artist' set it will be used as well as album name.
