    metadata for various artists CDs

what should I type in the artist field & artist album field for various artists cds? I notice on some albums, each track has the name for each artist, & other albums do not have the names of each artist for each track, ie; world music compilations where the artists are not known, it is just a mix of traditional tribal music.

I am archiving my albums to flac & then batch converting to mp3 for my ipod.

For a compilation CD leave the album artist blank and specify each artist individually.

do I leave blank the artist & Album artist fields when the metadata does not pick up artists & album artist for some of my world music cds? or do I type in Various artists in the artist & album artist fields?

On compilation cds where each track has a different artist, sometimes dbpoweramp fills in a name for the album artist field, do I leave it? or remove it to be blank like you said?

You should never have to do this as it is the compilation tag which defines this, but if your playback software does not use that then you might have to.

        Please give an example

Lee Scratch Perry, did he perform any of the tracks?

In this case Album artist does not need to be used, Lee Scratch Perry would be the first artist for each track and the contributing artists would be 2nd artists for a track.

So dbpoweramp misinterpreted the album as a compilation of various artists? at what point does one decide if an album is a true compilation? only when each & every track is by a different artist? or more than half of the album is by a different artist?

how would I undo the compilation tag that dbpoweramp applied to to this album that I ripped to flac? for post editing I use mp3tag.

So when an album is by a single artist, where the artist field is the same for all tracks, one does not need to fill in the album artist field? what if dbpoweramp fills in the album artist? do I delete this field & the content?

dBpoweramp relies on the online databases, they are not 100% correct all the time.
