    CD Ripper won't work over Remote Desktop

    Hi,

    I have a Windows 7 Professional HTPC system set up with CD Ripper installed on it and working perfectly.

    Recently, I've had more of a need to Remote Desktop into the machine rather than sit right at it. When I tried to use CD Ripper in this mode I noticed that it always says "No CD Drive Found", even though I can see the CD Drive in Explorer, and see it's content.
    Just to be clear, I'm talking about the CD drive on the HTPC machine, not on the Remote Desktop client.

    Is this intentional or have I missed a magic configuration option somewhere?

    Thanks in advance for any help

    Enable the debug mode in dBpoweramp Configuration (Music Converter Page), run CD Ripper then exit it. Then post the results here.

      Re: CD Ripper won't work over Remote Desktop

      Hi, thanks for the quick response.

      This is the output when run remote:

      Code:
      Using SCSI PassThrough  [clCDDA::SetCommunication]
      ->->  [frmMain::RefreshTrackListing]
        Quitting Meta Thread: Quit
        ->->  [clCDDA::ReturnDriveList]
          Got drive C:\ ** not CD Rom, type: 3 [cddaSCSIPassTru::FillDriveList]
          Error Cannot Open Drive  [cddaSCSIPassTru::GetDriveInfo]
          Got drive D:\ CD ROM ** ERROR getting drive info [cddaSCSIPassTru::FillDriveList]

        <-<-  [clCDDA::ReturnDriveList]
      <-<-  [frmMain::RefreshTrackListing]
      For the sake of completeness, this is the debug when run local (done about 30 seconds before the remote one:

      Code:
      Using SCSI PassThrough  [clCDDA::SetCommunication]

        Remote desktop connect as Administrator, because it looks like you do not have the access rights to access the cd drive.

          Re: CD Ripper won't work over Remote Desktop

          The user I connect as is an Administrator so that shouldn't be a problem.

          Some other info:

          - Running Windows 7 Professional. I also had this problem on the previous installation, that was Windows 7 Beta though.
          - I can see the CD drive in Windows Explorer and can open the drive and see the .cda files within.
          - If I try and play the cd in Media Player this also seems to fail, so it does seem to be some security option perhaps.

          I did some Googling and there are some comments about a Group Policy which controls whether you can access local resources when remote desktop'ing but the fact I can see the drive in Explorer seems to rule that out,also the option didn't seem to be present in the same place in Win7 as it was in previous versions.

          Thanks again for the help, it would be really useful to resolve this problem somehow as at the moment it is really limiting how I can use dbPowerAmp

            Re: CD Ripper won't work over Remote Desktop

            There are two access methods to a CD drive, normal file system based and low level where SCSI commands are sent to the drive.

            You could try: CD Ripper >> Options >> Comminication: Windows Internal

              Thanks, I'll try that.

              Is it possible that will degrade the quality of the rips?

                Actually, it turns out that it doesn't fix the problem anyway, unfortunately.

                I'm happy to try anything else out.

                  Another thought....

                  Have you tried running the remote desktop client in console mode?

                  I think, sometimes this is needed for things like running native sound drivers and using specific devices installed on the remote machine you are connecting to?

                  I believe that for Windows 7 they've changed the switch to /admin.

                  So for example "mstsc -v:<machinename-or-ipaddress> /admin"

                  dunno...might work.

                    Thanks for the suggestion, gave it a try but made no difference. I think on windows 7 you effectively always connect to console because it doesn't have the ability for multiple people to connect like server os's

                      Try installing UltraVNC then you have remote desktop on the real desktop.

                        Remote Desktop might be trying to map your local drive as D: (some similar products do). See if there's a way to turn that off. If not, as Spoon says, use VNC.

                          I imagine VNC will work, but I'd really rather not install it unless I absolutely have to.

                          I did some digging and I think I have a solution - the is a group policy you can change which <touches wood> seems to resolve the situation.

                          This is a link to the article which explains how to do that:

                          (note: I think the group policy editor has changed names in Windows 7 as gpedit.msc didn't exist - but searching for group edit found the tool anyway)

                          Thanks for the ideas, hopefully this might help out someone else too.

                            Were you able to resolve this issue, or did you just have to use VNC? I ask because I think I'm encountering the same thing.
