    point of no return for a CD ripped with errors

    In my quest to find a good accurate audio ripper to rip my Cds to mp3 for my ipod;I was referred to this program from CDfreaks, & I decided to download the trial version & try it. Its interface is much easier to navigate than exact audio copy; of which I have experimented with too. So here I am a newbie to this & getting the hang of it I think.

    I have taken on the big task of re ripping my 300+ CD collection to mp3 256, of which I had ripped into itunes before, but I wanted a better more reliable program. I have found some are ripping with errors, no matter how much I fiddle with the secure rip settings adjusting the amount of secure passes. I suppose with so many CDs in various conditions it is inevitable I will get ones with errors. At what point should I just give up on a CD, maybe replace it with a better copy & move on to the next? If there are errors in some songs on an album, does it mean it will not play on my ipod? does it mean those ripped albums are no good? Some of the albums with errors in fact played ok on CD players & did not sound bad. Some of them I had ripped before in itunes & they sounded ok, I would have never guessed there were errors.

    Errors likely mean the at the CD player has silenced out the bad block of audio, how much depends on the damage. Small errors you will probably not hear.

      you mean dbpower amp cd ripper has blocked or silenced the bad bits? how can i tell when I look at the rip symbols next to each song how big the errors are?

        The actual CD drive does the interpolation of errors. You can only tell the amount from the unrecoverable frame count.

          so when I see a red error symbol next to a song, it means there were unrecoverable errors & the drive interpolated them? it does not mean that the drive & dBpoweramp did a sloppy job of ripping right? that is one of the reasons I am going through my Cd collection again, for the better quality LAME encoding & secure ripping that I read itunes & windows media player do not use.

          Is there a certain amount of unrecoverable frame count that would make a bad rip? is there some kind of cut off point?

          Also at the end of each rip when the report box opens I read this at the bottom; drive is unable to read into lead out, uncheck over-read option. Where in the options would I find this? & what does this mean? it it be causing mistakes in the rips? I looked at the details of my drive & this is what came up;

          Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
          CD Drive: RW/DVD GCC-4480B
          Firmware: C104

            A red error means:

            Either the CD drive could not rip audio, it happens on highly damaged discs,
            Or there are secure settings which abort after a set condition

            The former would leave you with only part of the audio track.
