    VA Compilation Albums

How do I get the Compilation albums to show up correctly when I rip them?

I want them in like a VA Folder, with the Compilation Title Folder in that and then all songs just in the normal compilation title folder.

    Thanks!

You have to have the reference version of dMC and use a naming convention like this

    Code:
    [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Compilations[]\[album][IFMULTI] - Disc [disc][]\[track][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album][IFMULTI] - Disc [disc][]\[track][] [title]

Sorry, I'm still new to all this.

What is the reference version of dMC?

Hi Wayne - that piece of code (which I modified a little) worked for me. Thanks!

But what I'm unsure of is what happens if I leave the code in the "Dynamic"-field and try to rip a non-compilation, as I don't understand how the code works and if it's linked with the "Compilation"-checkbox somehow.

It seemed to work fine with one non-comp-CD I tried, but I can't figure out why it worked. Your code acted as the below code on a non-comp-CD (just modified a little regarding naming, so it would give a result as below, but just place files in the Compilation-dir).

I use this code for all non-comps: [artist]\[album]\[track] - [title]
...and would like that my comps to be store the same way - just in the "Compilations"-directory.

How does the code/poweramp check if it's a comp in the drive or not?

It doesn't seem to be the Compilation-checkbox...

EDIT: Sorry, with Wayne's code it does put a comp in a Compilations-dir when poweramp'a Compilation-checkbox is checked (and it doesn't if it's not checked).

But when I check the Compilation-checkbox when ripping a non-comp it does NOT place the files in the Compilation-dir. How come?

Is it because poweramp also check for multiple artists and links this info to the code?

The [IFCOMP]string[] function includes string if the CD is a Compilation CD and [IF!COMP]string[] function includes string if the CD is not a Compilation CD.

This is set using the Compilation checkbox (Compilation tag is populated with a value of 1).

If this is not working, then your Naming string is incorrect. Perhaps you can post the Naming string here?

This is the code I'm using for the comps. I like the filenames to contain the artist also hence the last [artist]. This is of cause meaningless when ripping non-comps, but I haven't figured that out yet.

              [IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Compilations[]\[album][IFMULTI] - Disc [disc][]\[track][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album][IFMULTI] [CD[disc]][]\[track][] - [title] [[artist]]

But take a look at the EDIT in my first post - I made an error.

                My wish is this:

I'd like to have non-comps named this way:
                [artist]\[album]\[track] - [title]

                ex: Bo Hansson\Magicians Hat\01 - Big City.mp3

                and comps named this way:
                \Compilations\[album]\[track] - [title]

ex: \Compilations\Psychedelic Swirls Vol 1\01 - Big City [Bo Hansson].mp3

Is this what the above posted code does?

Just seem odd, that I can't force a non-comp to be placed in the Compilations-dir by ticking poweramp's Compilation-checkbox.

                And....

Is is possible to get the code to add [artist] to the filename in comps, like below, while NOT adding it to non-comps:

                \Compilations\[album]\[track] - [title] [artist]

ex: \Compilations\Psychedelic Swirls Vol 1\01 - Big City [Bo Hansson].mp3

THANKS for the help so far.

The following will handle both your situations automatically. So long as the compilation tag is ticked on in the album it will be treated as a compilation.

                  [IFCOMP]Compilations\[album]\[track] - [title] [[artist]][][IF!COMP][artist]\[album]\[track] - [title][]
And this is what I use to use "album artist" if exists instead of artist (and I also put Disk * subdirectories under a multi disk album parent directory for either comp or noncomp)
                  [IFCOMP]Compilations\[album] [IFMULTI] \Disc [disc][]\[track] - [title] [[artist]][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album][IFMULTI] \Disc [disc][]\[track] - [title][]

Thanks a lot. I'll try that out soon. I can figure out how the name will look in the first string, you wrote. But I can't figure out how the last part of the second string will come out - would you be so kind to give an example of how the filenames and folders will look when using the last string?

not sure I know what you mean by last string. You mean the one I use? here's how anything will look in my string (second one) (and in the dynamic naming setup, you can enter the string and it shows you what things will look like right on the screen):

(x:\music is just whatever your parent music directory is....I'm just using that as an example)

Noncompilations (if AlbumArtist exist, it uses that, if not it uses Artist):

                      single disk:
                      x:\music\The Beatles\Abbey Road\01 - Come Together.flac

                      multi disk:
                      x:\music\The Beatles\The Beatles\Disc 1\01 - Back in the U.S.S.R.flac
                      .............................................\Disc 2\01 - Birthday.flac

                      Compilations:

                      single disk:
                      x:\music\Compilations\Twisted Willie\01 - Time of the Preacher - Johnny Cash.flac

                      multi disk:
                      x:\music\Compilations\This One's For Him - A Tribute to Guy Clark\Disc 1\01 - That Old Time Feeling - Rodney Crowell.flac

Sorry - yes, I meant the second of the two strings (the one you use), that your wrote. Forgot all about poweramp showing how it'll look in the dynamic naming setup. Thanks a lot for the code/string!!!

                          Another thing:

I've never used the "album artist" tag. I'm not sure, but last time I converted my CD collection, I for a reason I can't remember consequently deleted all info in this field/tag. I remember something about the albums coming up in iTunes or was it on my smartphone in a way that didn't suit me. I've tried to google the difference between using the "artist"-field and the "album artist"-field in relation to how the titles are shown when browsing (I guess this varies depending on the mediaplayer).

Could you shed some light on how to use "album artist" and "album" - i.e. when to use it and when not to use it?

It's a personal decision based on your own use case. Some use it a lot while others never use it. I use it in only limited ways. If I have an artist that uses many names (Miles Davis, Miles Davis Quintet, Miles Davis Sextet, etc. I will use an ALBUMARTIST tag field named simply "Miles Davis" so that all the Miles Davis stuff is under a single artist directory in my file structure *and* in my music player menu. I use primarily Logitech Media Player with my Squeezebox networked music players. I also use foobar2000 on windows. And this works well with both.

I also use ALBUMARTIST if I want to give a compilation an overall artist (again for menu/searching purposes). For example, I might have a compilation CD that many different artists doing their versions of Bob Dylan songs. Each track will have an ARTIST tag based on the actual performing artist (and will show up if I search or browse for them). However, I give the entire album an ALBUMARTIST of "Bob Dylan". This way, this tribute album shows up if I search for Bob Dylan albums (even though Bob Dylan is not an artist on the CD). Most of my compilation albums I leave the ALBUMARTIST tag blank, but some (like the Dylan example) I use a name. However, in all cases for compilation albums, I tick the "Compilation" tag (which sets COMPILATION =1).

I know other people that make their ALBUMARTIST always the same as ARTIST, except for compilation albums where they may put "Various Artists" in the ALBUMARTIST tag.
