Rips Confirmed by DBPA as Accurate or Secure Yield 15 kb Files

I just ripped 17 CDs, presumably to flac, with all tracks reporting either Accurate or Secure without frame-scrubbing at the end of the passes. When I looked at the files in Windows Explorer, the were all in the error sub-folders and the files sizes were ~15kb.

As you know, this "15kb problem" has been reported before. Do you have some idea of what portion of the dbpa logic could create such files? I believe that it may be associated with flac encoding. After discovering the error sub-folders and seeing the small files sizes, I watched the ripping progress bars more carefully. The ripping times seem to be rougly normal; however the encoding step finishes almost instantly after it begins.

I tried re-starting dbpa, but no joy. Now I will try re-booting my computer to see if that solves the problem. This is very strange, since my ripping setup was working fine just a few days ago.

Here are logs from one CD. As you can see, I get the same result from both of my drives. As another poster mentioned recently, this situation is not good, because every indication is that the rips are good. I got to CD 17 before I realized that this was occuring...pity the poor person who does a whole days' ripping before discovering the problem.

CD Ripper will report as accurate then pass-off the audio to the encoder (FLAC in this case) to encode.

Try enabling the option in FLAC to verify the file, it should detect if 25KB is written instead of 25MB

I have always had the flac encoder option set to verify. No recent changes to antivirus/antimalware software.

I got distracted but will now try re-booting.

Ok; I tried Apple Lossless; same problem. With both encoders, after ripping the encoding progress bar stays at 0% for an unusually long time (maybe 5 seconds or so), then the log pops up saying that all is well.

Not sure what to do now...except maybe re-install dbpa.

The filename might be too long, especially if I: is a network drive and "My Music" isn't at the root of the drive. Try ripping to a folder on your local C: drive and see if it works there. Then try ripping to a folder on the root of the compute I: is on.

Ok; thank you all for the suggestions. Local (USB) drive; My Music at the root. (No change there from the previous working state.) Re-booting did not help. I re-installed ripper without touching plug-ins and re-gained operation. (Who knows what happened...)

However, following the re-install I noticed that the encoding progress bar would sit at 0% for variable lengths of time depending upon the files size (about one minute on a ~170mb file) before beginning to encode. I did not remember seeing this behavior before; however, I was testing today using a classical CD with unusually large files. I opened Process Explorer and noticed that that HDCD plug-in, which I do not need at the moment but which I installed because the help says that doing so will not affect 16-bit file operation, was using 50% cpu during at least a portion of the time waiting for encoding to begin. So, I removed the HDCD plug-in and solved that problem.

As to the original problem, I had (and have) the "Move Destination File" plug-in installed. The symptom included storing the ~15k "stub" files in the error sub-folder, as I mentioned before. Thus, wherever the problem originated (core app or flac plug-in), the "Move Destination File" plug-in knew about it. You may want to consider enabling the "Move Destination File" plug-in to communicate back to the core application when it senses such an error, enter an error into the log, and display an error at the encoding progress bar, so that the user does not rip a quantity of CDs only to discover that his "My Music" directory is full of the useless "stub" files.

Regarding the flac verification option, it was clear from the encoding progress bar, after I noticed that it just flashed for a fraction of a second (17 CDs later), that flac was not encoding. The verification process, as I understand the help, consists of decoding the flac-encoded file and comparing the result to the original file.

Just an FYI for diagnostic purposes: The CRCs of the re-rips following resolution of the above-described problem by re-installing dMC are consistently all green except for the last track, which is always red. This tells me that in the failed state, the ripper at least properly ripped the files initially, except for possibly the last track. After that, I have no idea what happened to the audio.

Strangely, for CDs in the Accurate DB, in the failed state the last tracks always ripped as Accurate. However, after the re-install the last tracks display a red CRC, indicating that the "Accurate" CRC in the failed state did not match the "Accurate" CRC after the re-install.

So, I do not know...there appear to be issues. Bits and pieces of my experience are scattered throughout other posts as well. I will just be overjoyed if my system stays in its current state so that I do not have to lurk on these boards anymore. Listening to computer-based music is supposed to me a minor avocation for me, nothing more.

AccurateRip worked upto the end of the disc - 5 frames (a very small amout), but it is possible to have an error in those last 5 frames, which accuraterip cannot pickup.

I had this problem too with certain CD's.

If I disable C2 the error goes away and I get full sized rips. Enable C2 and the rips become ~13kb again.

The CRC reported by DBPA in the log for the 13kb files matches the CRC for the full size files but the CRC for the 13kb files is wrong!

If I calculate the extracted WAV CRC for the full sized file the CRC matches what DBPA reports. But if I calculate the extracted WAV CRC for the 13kb files they do not match the CRC DBPA reports!

Something has gone horribly wrong! Failing to get a good rip is one thing, but failing and telling me it all went fine is another! :vmad:
