Older 25y/o CD's rip better than new ones?

I am seeing strange behavior with ripping some of my CD's. My drives I am using for ripping are LG GSA-H62N. Some newer CD's that were released (1998-'08) have no scratches, yet some tracks won't rip secure.

Then I just tried a 25-year-old CD: Cars - Heartbeat City. This thing has tons of scratches, yet it ripped perfectly! Only one pass required for each track, secure rip.

I would like to know how this is possible? Was the CD manufacture process better at that time. It was made by Polygram in Germany. I also notice that the edge of the CD is almost 1/2 thinner than newer CD's. It looks like they pressed down the outer edge to seal it.
