Cannot rip any CD. Errors all over :(

Hello there. First off, little intro.

I have the Samsung SH-S203S SATA drive running on Vista x64 SP1 on a evga nforce750i mobo.

Whenever I try to rip anything, I get errors stating

Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 0 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 12082) [clRipperSecure::Rip]

And this goes on an on for every subsequent track. The first track tries to read, get to a certain percentage (varies depending on CD used) but ultimate fails before 50% and all subsequent ones are pretty much insta-fail.

    Few more notes.

When trying to detect cache, it says Unable to read CD and sets it to 0. But it does this with every CD. I use the DVD drive to watch movies, play games, etc. so I know the drive works. I've also burned a few DL dvd's so that part of it works too.

Even Burst ripping fails however not as fast as Secure does.

    I'm at a loss :(

    1. In the BIOS are the SATA ports set to native or compatible/ide mode?
    2. What SATA drivers are you using in windows, microsoft's or the chipset maker's?
    3. In the CD Ripper options screen, what "Communication" method is being used? SCSI Pass Through (SPT), Windows Internal (For Limited Accounts), ASPI, or SCSI Pass Through (D8)?

My suspicion is that some mixture of changes to the settings above will get things working to some degree.

Hey bhaor, thanks for taking time to reply

      1. The mobo has no setting for native / compatible mode so I'll assume its left on Native

      2. Using the microsoft drivers

      3. Using SPT. I don't have option for ASPI.

Try setting the ripper to Burst mode. Does the error still occur?

Yup. Still occurs in Burst, just takes a bit longer to fail (extra 10% or so)

Try another ripping program, if this works / does not it will rule in/out dbpoweramp.

Well EAC cannot detect a proper 'read mode'. It has a few more options then dbpoweramp, and I've tried all, but none seem to work.

Going in burst mode produces errors. Damn it.

I've ordered the SH-223Q drive. Maybe something is just wrong with this 203S.

For the record, should I be using microsoft drivers, or should I try to install nforce drivers (which I'd rather not as they're very slow and crappy)

I'd stick with microsoft drivers. Also, double check the BIOS. I haven't seen any that really don't offer sata compatibility mode (which emulates IDE)...but maybe some of the newer ones may no longer offer compatibility mode.

Possibly it is a bad drive, but I suspect the problem lies elsewhere. Also worth checking into: use ImgBurn's Tools/Filter Driver Load Order... feature to see if you perhaps have some sort of conflicting filter driver attached to the optical drive's driver.

Note that compatibility mode is sometimes also called "legacy" or "ATA" mode.

Well it was definetly the windows drivers.

I had to install the nforce 'MediaShield' package (which is their SATA IDE) drivers for it to work.

As if I needed more reasons to avoid nvidia chipsets like a plague on my next upgrade.

Well now you guys know for next time.

Good to know you got it to work, even though your solution was to do the opposite of my suggestion. Sorry I steered you wrong.

No worries. On every other chipset you would've been right.. and trust me, I wish I didn't have to install them but such is the way .. for the moment
