Controlling Output Volume of Converted File

If this has been brought up already, my apologies. I'm using the latest version of the ripper. I'll take a CD, rip it to 256k mp3 format. The problem is that the volume of the converted files are too loud and are a bit distorted. For example if I open up the file in Sonic Sound Forge to edit it, the sound waves are almost a solid block and when I play it the meters are clipping into the red. This doesn't happen with all CDs though, but quite a few nonetheless.

How can you go about controlling how loud the CD ripper rips the files? Is there some type of master or converted file output volume adjustment anywhere?

Use the DSP volume normalize and set a target volume a little bit lower (also replaygain method is possibly the best).
