That is correct yes, the calculation must be done for all files together.

Which is must be why it is called album replaygain

Gee, if one is to assume that the name of a utility is comprehensively descriptive of its function such that is is intuitively obviously and is left to the user as an exercise to fathom, then this utility should be called "try to run it on lots of files and watch it fail to create album gains on many of them for no apparent reason and without feedback".

In other words, tough to determine what this does if it doesn't work reliably.
