Ripping Distorts Streaming Music - New Problem

    Hi.

Recently a new minor problem has developed.

When I rip CDs to .flac with dBpoweramp or any other ripper for that matter, my ability to listen to streaming internet music suffers.

During the ripping process, the internet stream (24 kbps, mono) I am listening to becomes jittery and distorted.

I am running a HP computer with an AMD 64 x 2 3800+ processor and 2 GB of RAM. Windows XP Media Center SP3.

Previously I have not had this problem. I have been happily ripping tons of CDs while listening to NPR and other streams.

I realize that this problem is not specific to dBpoweramp but I thought the collective cerebral power might be available here to solve this nuisance problem.

Re: Ripping Distorts Streaming Music - New Problem

I have looked for spyware and viruses that are using processor cycles. I have always run Comodo Firewall and AVG Free.

I have 28 GB free on my hard drive and I have defragged in the last month but I may repeat that.

I dunno it just seems like something has reduced my processors ability to multitask.

Let me know if you have any theories.

If you remote desktop into the HP machine select >> Start >> Run: taskmgr.exe

Have a look at the CPU usage, for Flac it should be only 10%-20% if it is 50% then you drive (CD drive) might have gone into PIO mode.

          Thank you.

Resetting the DMA status seems to have corrected the problem.

          Woooohoooo.

Fixing things is such a great feeling
