I'm Looking For The Absolute Best Settings For BEST QUALITY in CD Grab

Please, I need the absolute best setting for dBpowerAMP's CD Grab.

Lol, I hope someone is able to answer all of the questions, unlike some who just pick one out of many, and leave me hanging.

    Useful Information
*Expected File Format - Uncompressed .wav
    *4234 KB/sec (x24)
*My drive has C2 Error Detection
    * All of my CD's have no scratches, and I never use them directly for music playback.

    My Drive
    Manufacturer: MATSHITA
    CD Drive: DVD-RAM UJ-850S
    Firmware: 1.21
    Serial: 70219UKMEHC71122712
    Maximum Speed: 4234 KB/sec (x24)
    Current Speed: 4234 KB/sec (x24)
    Spin-down After: 32 seconds
    Buffer Size: 2 MB
    Accurate Stream: Yes
    C2 Error Pointers: Yes
    Reads ISRC: Yes
    Reads UPC: Yes

    Options
[1] Ripping Method: Choose [Burst] or [Secure]?
[2] AccurateRip: [Check] or [Uncheck] "Query Ripping Results with AccurateRip"
[3] Meta Data: What meta data tags can be saved considering that I am ripping into .wav?
    [4] CD ROM:
[Check] or [Uncheck] "Eject After Rip"
    Ripping Speed: [x6], [x12], [x20], [x24], [Maximum]
    Spin-up Time: [1/8], [1/4], [1/2], [1], [2], [4], or [8] seconds
    Spin-down Time: [default], [never], [1/8], [1/4], [1/2], [1], [2], [4], [8], [16], [32] seconds, [1], [2], [4], [8], [16], or [32] minutes
Sample Offset: What Happens if I Reset to Zero, it is currently +102, what is 102?
[Check] or [Uncheck] "Read into Lead-in or Lead-out"
[SCSI Pass Through] or [Windows Internal] for "Communication"
[Check] or [Uncheck] "Prevent auto-run on all CD Drives"

    [Secure Settings]
    Pass 1: Accurate Rip Verified
Pass 2: Why does when I check C2 Error Detection, Pass 2 is grayed out?

    Ultra Secure:
[Check] or [Uncheck] "Enable Ultra Secure Ripping"
How many do I put for Minimum Ultra Passes?
How many do I put for Maximum Ultra Passes?
[Check] or [Uncheck] "Vary Drive Speed Each Pass"

    Individual Bad Frames:
How many do I put for Maximum Re-Reads?
    Set Drive Speed: [x6], [x12], [x20], [x24], or [Maximum]

    Drive Read Cache:
Was detected, but all I got was a 4 KB, is that a bad number? I thought I saw 1000 before I clicked on detect, but I wasn't sure if it was 1000 bits, bytes, kilobits, or kilobytes.

    Test FUA Support:
No Support on an unscratched CD, Do I [Check] or [Uncheck] "Clear Read Cache with FUA"?

    Detect C2 Support:
There is C2 Support on my drive, Do I [Check] or [Uncheck] "C2 Error Pointers For Error Detection"?

    Unrecoverable Frames:
Abort after unrecoverable frames: What do I type in the text box? (Currently "no abort" is in the box)
[Check] or [Uncheck] Interpolate Unrecoverable Frames
[Check] or [Uncheck] Mark track as error in inesecure

    Secure Extraction Log:
    Report Contents: [Simple],[Detailed], or [Complete]
[Check] or [Uncheck] Write to file
Log Filename: What do I put?
It is Currently: [rippedtopath]\[IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][] - [album]...I want to do my own settings but it's too complicated...why are there two album artist?
[Check] or [Uncheck] Add to information log

    WTF Does this mean:
AccurateRip: Accurate (confidence 17) [Pass 1]
    CRC32: 0C29E4F2

How the heck do I measure confidence? The numbers vary so much, and there is no guide about confidence #.

Then do the maximum number for everything you ask about. You'll waste a lot of time, but you'll get the absolute best setting. Absolute best setting is pretty variable depending on hardware, cd condition and the amount of time the user has.

    Lol, please be serious.

Rip to Aiff. It's like wav but holds a tag.

Look at some other threads and figure it out. Each drive has a unique sample offset. It was calculated for your drive, so if you reset it to zero, you'll have to recalculate it again.

How much time do you have? Look at some threads and you'll find what people think are acceptable answers to these questions.

That contains an "if" statement. If it's a compilation with various artists, it does one thing, if not, it does another. You should put whatever makes sense to you. Click "set" and figure it out. It gives you a display that lets you see exactly what you're getting.

WTF. Look around the forum and/or click the red question mark in cd grab.

Read up on accurate rip. If there's multiple people that have the same rip as you, that means that the likelihood of you having a bad rip is VERY VERY small.

Re: I'm Looking For The Absolute Best Settings For BEST QUALITY in CD Grab

I'll only answer a few, sorry:

First, "Accurate (confidence 17) [Pass 1]" means that on first try ("Pass 1"), it got a result that matches 17 other rips (by different people), which means that (unless there is an error in the pressing itself, so everyone's with this pressing of the CD has got the same error, and it is an error which goes undetected by the software), then the probability that the rip is perfect, is as close to 100% as you could get in practice.

Second, there is no way really of telling "absolute best" without knowing your preferences. If you tell dBpoweramp to do massive re-reading attempts on troublesome frames (of CDs not in AccurateRip), you increase the chance of getting a result -- you increase both the chance of getting the correct one and of getting an incorrect one. You might rather want it to flag as inaccurate -- it depends on whether your preference is "having a file with high probability of being correct" or "not having possibly incorrect files". (Of course you can put everything high, read the logs and delete afterwards.)

[1] Secure, unless it is Defective By Design
      [2] Check
[3] Don't use WAV, use FLAC.
[4] Eject doesn't matter for quality,
spinup/spindown I think only matters for wear,
offset is CRUCIAL TO GET ACCURATERIP WORKING (you really don't worry about the about 1/72th of a second that might be offset by the 102 frames, you should rather care about the AccurateRip verification),
      check Ultra Secure
don't know for sure about passes, I use 3,4,3, vary: yes.
How many re-reads? Depends on whether you want a rip or want to avoid an incorrect. My advise would be to create two profiles, one with a low number (say, the default) and one with a high number -- then you know which ones are troublesome, and if you really want to rip that CD at any cost, including the risk of an inaccurate file (because that is better than no file), then before you go to bed, switch profile and re-rip the troublesome CD overnight. Similar is for interpolate unrecoverable frames -- applies *if* there is an unrecoverable.
Insecure as error -- that is only an information item, isn't it?
      Check C2, definitely
You want complete logs. The "two album artists" are just because it chooses Album Artist if it exists, this field should in some sense match your Naming scheme where your ripped files are put.

You should also install the HDCD dsp in order to decode HDCD discs as intended. Cath: dBpoweramp does not -- not yet -- correct pre-emphasis. Right-click on the bar that says Title, Length, Rip Status etc, and tell it to display "Track Technical". Then if you ever discover a "Pre-emphasis" then put aside the CD for later.

Its your choice, but why? Do you have playback limitations?

I wan't my archive uncompressed. The only compressed format I will ever use is MP3, or until the day Flac or something better replaces MP3 universally.

Is it me or am I the only one who thinks lossless compression really blows? They are so incompatible with everything.

I think its just you ;-) FLAC is pretty well supported, will save you 40+% storage space, is better for meta-data, easily transcoded to lossy codec of choice, and its lossless!

Except with tagging schemes, which .wav sucks at. If I ever need .wav, I'll decode a .flac.

Actually, Porcus, dMC r13 writes an ID3 tag into WAV files. Now, whether the program you use to play the files supports the tags or not is another story.

As for AccurateRip, +102 means your CD drive starts reading 102 samples past whatever baseline AccurateRip is using. Don't worry about missing parts of the beginning, there are 44,100 samples in one second, so you aren't missing anything.

Confidence numbers in AccurateRip show how many other people agree with the CRC values for your rips, or, in other words, ripped the song exactly the same as you did.

I am still staying with .Wav and .MP3

I want one for archival. And the other for playback. And I would pretty much want to keep them seperate. Besides .Wav makes me feel like a big man :smile2:.
