Flac Files Smaller than MP3

I just ripped an 8 disc book to Flac (Level 8). I then used batch convert to convert to MP3 (Lame 320 CBR.)

The resulting files are remarkable that the flac files as smaller than the MP3? Is this due to better compression rate with really simple material vs 320 CBR?

The flac files are 1.05GB
And the MP3 are 1.29GB

Is there something to be concerned about here? I'll try some music and see how it compares when I have some time.

I would expect the mp3 files to be smaller.

Please can you check the files sizes again, comparing a single flac against the corresponding mp3 (check the tags and artwork are the same)?
