We're very sorry to hear about your troubles. Let's try to get to the bottom of this.

I understand that Asset's web interface is very low-tech and practically uses stone-age HTML constructs.

Please make sure you hit "apply" at the bottom of the configuration page after any change to Asset settings. Just toggling options or editing the box does not immediately update the configuration; pressing "apply" commits the changes.

There is no interaction between closing the web browser window and runnig Asset instance - which you can see for yourself in HTML sources, no scripts whatsoever. The only time the web browser actually interacts with running Asset instance is when you load pages or press form submit buttons.
