    Album Artist Not Showing in Artist/Album

    Asset 5.1/Win 7

    The "Album Artist" tags in my FLAC files are not showing up in Artist indices. Yet, Asset is aware of them, because the tag values show up when listing the albums.

    For instance, say a file is tagged as follows

    [ALBUM ARTIST]=Joe Blow
    [ARTIST]=Fanny Adams
    [ALBUM]=Greatest Hits

    "Fanny Adams" will appear under [F], and the album is listed with both "Greatest Hits" and "Joe Blow"; but "Joe Blow" will not appear in the Artist/Album, either under [J] (or [B] for that matter) or under All Artists.

    Is this a feature or a bug? (I'd regard it as a bug.) Is it corrected in the latest version?

    Thanks.

    You would need to browse by Advanced Search >> Album Artist / Album

      Thanks, that works. (What's the difference between "Advanced Search" and "Dynamic Browsing"?)

      So you're saying, "it's a feature, not a bug". Well, I'm sorry to have to say it, but it's an atrocious feature. I cannot imagine how anyone could've thought excluding "Album Artist" from the Artist index was a good idea.

        Artist usually refers to track artist, hence why you aren't seeing the album artist in the artist listing, as album artist refers to the whole album.

          Right... that's why it's called "Artist/Track".

          Er... wait a sec... wait a sec... it ain't called "Artist/Track", it's called "Artist/Album"!...

          You got me confused...

          Hey, Spoon, why can't we get a proper reference for Asset, you know, something that tells us exactly how tags are mangled and where each tag goes?

          I think omitting the Album Artist from the Artist/Album tree is daft; mville here thinks it's the cat's meow; either way, if there is a proper reference, then a poor blighter like me won't get mugged by Asset's idiosyncratic behaviour and have to re-tag 5000 albums... again!

            Sez no one!! There is no official tagging standard, so software developers have been making it up as they go.

            In my experience it is one of the quirks when tagging music. Different media player/server software adopt different standards and support different tags and can all be seen as idiosyncratic.

            As a result, I have come to the conclusion that the use of Album Artist and (Track) Artist is the best way to use these 2 tags, but that does not mean you have to use them this way.

            However, to just use the Artist tag is problematic as there are occasions when the album artist and track artist may not be the same. Hence the fact that both Album Artist and Artist tag exist.

            So, please don't post stating what I think (I can do that myself, thank you) when you have no idea what I really think.

              Asset tries to cover all scenarios when browsing a music library, because some users don't populate the Album Artist tag, only the Artist tag.

                Good. So we can safely ignore the above-mentioned proposition.

                  So... some users don't populate the Album Artist tag, therefore Asset should penalize those who do use it by omitting Album Artist from Artist/Album. Yes, I see, it makes perfect sense.

                    It is only you that thinks Album Artist should be included in the Artist / Album view and that users are being penalised.

                    Why? I do not know, as you can browse by Album Artist / Album OR by Artist / Album due to these 2 tags being different.

                    I mean by this logic, why not add Composer, Conductor, Performer etc. to the list. No thank you, I definitely DO NOT want to see Album Artist listed everywhere Artist is listed and to my thinking, does make perfect sense.

                    ... one more thing, dBpoweramp and Asset supports multi-value tags, which may help you with your original issue.

                        Nearly as patronising as that idiot from the States. Ronald Grump is his name, I think.

                        I'm done here in this thread.
