Access Asset on QNAP outside home

I am trying to experiment with streaming on my iPhone (VLC player). Within reach of the Wifi-Lan, everything works fine (except for dsf files, but that is a VLC problem). Has anybody experience with streaming music over internet with QNAP - Asset - VLC - iPhone. I am looking for guidance. QNAP documentation on Asset is minimal.

You would want to setup a VPN and connect to your local network remotely.

UPNP will not work over public networks.
