You can use a player on a PC, such as foobar with the upnp extension, or if have ipad try Plugplayer. This will rule out asset.

Unfortunately my PC hardware is Apple, so Foobar is out. Ideally looking for another UPnP server that will run on QNAP and supports stream conversion that I could test.

plugplayer is a upnp renderer (player) it will stream from asset.

I can use other players - notably Creation5, but get the same behavior with higher resolution settings.
