DSD files transcoded as WAV24/96 !

Hi all,

I'have DBPowerAmp Music Converter 14.4 and Asset Upnp 5.1 running on my PC and streaming files stored on my sonology NAS, using an Android tablet and Bubble Upnp as a Controller.

Strangly, all the DSD (.dsf) files I have are correctly recognized by Asset Upnp but they are sent to the renderer as WAV 24/96. This is shown by The Bubble Upnp controller.

When using the standard Synology server, the files are correctly sent as 2.8 Mhz DSD files, both on Bubble upnp and my DAC.

After checking Asset Upnp Parameter, I verified that :
- DBPowerAmp configuration / codec / advanced options : the DSD decoder is installed, set to "Decode PCM' and decoding down sampling '96 Khz'
- Asset Upnp configuration / Advanced Settings : The Audio format streaming option is set at 'As is' for DFF and DSF files.

So, I do not understand why such a conversion is performed ...

Is there the way to remove the DSD -> WAV conversion ?

Hi All,

Funnily enough I was going to send a question along the same lines! My NAIM Dac now supports DSD, so I downloaded a few DSD test files from Native DSD. I too notice that on my PC they show as the following: Sample rate: 96kHz; Sample size: 24 bit; Bit rate: 4,608 kbps (DVD); Audio quality: Perfect (Lossless); and Type: dsf File. They play fine on the DAC, but am I "hearing" them in DSD format or 24:96 format?? The NAIM Dac does not actually display the file type (this is normal), but does show it as a high res file, so not sure which actual file type??

DSD handling: 'as is' sends untouched audio/x-dff or audio/x-dsf. 'as Wav' decodes the DSD to PCM. 'as DoP' embeds the DSD bitstream into a WAVE file, requires a DoP compatible DAC, only DSD64 files are supported

You can set debugging on Asset in the configuration page, stream one file, then see what it shows in the debug log.

Note, if you change an option, you have to clear the track from the player, and rebrowse to the location, then add it again, if the control point caches, then it is possible it is sending the previous option.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Sorry, but a bit too technical for me though! I am not trying to convert the DSF file I downloaded from Native DSD. I simply copy it to a USB stick for playback in the NAIM DAC. In the computer folder it however shows as 24/96, so not sure what I am then listening to through the hi-fi; 24/96 or DSD (1 bit, 2.8223Mhz). Apologies if this sounds all too simplistic! At the end of the day, I am trying to compare DSD format with hi-res FLAC/WAV (e.g. 24/96) in terms of audio quality to see whether it is worth the extra expense of buying DSD files.

Hello ,

One more thing : when I check audio properties of my .dsf files on Windows 10, It show up '24 bits', '96 khz' and 'bitrate 4608 kbps' which is not at all the case since they are pure DSD files ....

It do not know where it comes from.

This does not seem to disturb foobar or the synology Upnp server, but maybe it is used by Asset Upnp Server ?

The audio properties tab is from dBpoweramp, if you were to decode the dsd file, to FLAC for example it would decode as that.

The file is being decoded as a wave file, which is strange because it gives the url:

Which is just wrong for dsf. If you open windows explorer and type:

%appdata%

browse to dBpoweramp\uMediaLibrary

open the file AssetUPnPDefinedAudioTypesv5

and look at .dsf line, it should be:

Hi,

in this file, there are no .dsf part.

There many extension such as mp3, mp4, ogg, flac, wav, aiff, ... covered

but no .dsf

Uninstall Asset, delete the AssetUPnPDefinedAudioTypesv5 file, then reinstall the latest asset (redownload).

The control point is choosing the presented .wav over the .dsf, so you can set dsf to 'as single' to only give out .dsf

Perhaps slightly off topic but I understand that dBpoweramp codec central provides an advanced setting for converting DSD dsf/dff to DoP wav or flac.

As the QNAP versions of Asset UPnP do not yet provide support for streaming native DSD (dsf/dff files) could DoPwav or DoPflac files be a way of streaming DSD direct from my NAS drive using Asset on my QNAP NAS?

Sadly, reinstalling Asset Upnp is not enough : I still got a WAV24/96 conversion when playing Dsf files... and audio format streaming option for Dsf is correctly set : "As is".

Any other idea to fixe this ?
