How can I get better sound quality from PC Sound Capture?

I'd like to use Asset UPnP to play PC sound through my UPnP renderers.

I have two UPnP renderers, a Linn Majik DS and a Pro-Ject Stream Box DS. I have set up PC Sound Capture as described and I can play PC sound through them both.

However I can ony get MP3 sound at 320kbps. By comparison, when I do the same thing using Linn Soundcast I get PCM 44.1 khz/16bit 1411kbps. The sound through Soundcast is also much better than what I get using Asset PC Sound Capture.

How do I configure Asset PC Sound Capture to get the same quality that I can get using Soundcast?

In Asset Advanced Settings >> Audio Format Streaming

Set WASAPI to as WAV

Hi Spoon,

I did as you suggested and the indication is now WAV 44.1 khz/16bit 1411kbps.

However the sound is no better. It's still much worse than with Songcast.

What next can you suggest?

Is it that Windows is doing some processing that Songcast bypasses? If so how can I disable it?

No, Windows is recording as CD quality.

I think you might be seeing placebo, especially as 320Kbps mp3 is transparent for most people under double blind testing.

Try a blind test of wave vs songcast.

The difference is very obvious.

It's not close.

the Soundcast sound is rich, full and smooth while the sound I get from PC Sound Capture is thin, splashy and overly sibilant. Not at all CD quality.

I seem to have resolved this ... or rather it may have resolved itself.

In working with the folks from Jamcast in an attempt to resolve the same problem I rebooted my machine and all that was shrill and tinny is now rich and full as it should be.

Not sure why the reboot seems to have worked.

I will listen for a few days to compare the sound with Songcast and Jamcast to see whether there are any differences.
