strange playback with LaCie MiniHD

I'm running Asset Control with Asset UPNP on Vista, playing to a LaCie MiniHD. Everything seems fine up until 'Play Album'; at that point the tracks go over to the playlist but nothing happens. If i then hit play, i get a 10 second intro of each song.
With KinskyDesktop its even worse - the library is there and browsing works fine, but nothing plays at all.
I would love to hear that i'm doing something stupidly wrong because this is the closest i've found to the software i'm looking for - everything about it is right ... except it doesn't play.
any thoughts are much appreciated...

It can play tracks when you add one at a time to the player?

Nope, same 10 seconds then nothing.

What other methods do you have for controlling the lacie? do they supply software?

they supply Twonky Server, but no Control Point. i've tried using Twonky Manager with some minor success but it has no support for flac, so i didn't persevere.
