Streaming FLAC "as is" to iPad

Although I use it mostly as a remote control when listening to music through my WD TV Live, I sometimes also choose to hear my music collection through mi iPad (with headphones).

I have Asset configured with the default "as is" for all streaming, but obviously it recognizes that the iPad will not handle FLAC, and sends it something else, which I presume is mp3.

If so, what quality of mp3 is the default? Could I change this default to a higher bit rate mp3 or even to Apple losless, but ONLY for my iPad? FLACs are fine for my WD TV Live.

I do use the PlugPlayer. Does this mean this app is downconverting FLAC or that it is actually capable of playing them?
