How do I remove hiss background noise?

Hi,
I have used dmc auxilary input to copy over from a tape cassette to mp3 format. All went well except there is a lot of background 'hiss' noise. I would like to remove this.

For starters you should have recorded to uncompressed wav, to allow for best quality possible of the recording.

After that you can attempt to clean up the wav using numerous methods (some described in the forum like in http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=8590 , others you can Google for). After your wav is as good as can be, you convert it to mp3 or other formats.
