Read the help and the forum. Everything is there.

Get the right codecs from codec central for decoding and for encoding.

If the m4a files are not protected, it shouldn't be a problem.
You would need dBpowerAMP Music Concerter, the m4a/mp4/Apple Lossless codec (for reading the m4a file, and either PowerPack (to convert to mp3) or the WMA codec (for converting to wma).
Problems might arise if the m4a files have more than 2 channels (mp3 does not support more than 2 channels so you would need an intermediate conversion), or maybe if the m4a files are very highly compressed, etc.
If you are running into problems, it would help to have specifics in terms of the m4a files you are trying to convert (bitrate, frequency, channels) and the settings you are trying to convert to in mp3 or wma and a description of the problems you are encountering.

Best wishes,
Bill

Have you installed dMC and the appropriate codecs from Codec Central? How did you initially convert your CDs to m4a and get them onto your iPod?
