DSD and Asset

Hi,

I have added ASSEt to my windows home server. I have set DSD setting as "As it is", when i go to my laptop and play DSF files via Assett in windows media player, it is able to play the file.

When i copy same file into my laptop, windows media player fails to play it.

Does it mean that somewhere along the line, DSD is being converted into PCM?

Also do I need a DSD enabled DAC to play DSD files on my laptop directly without conversion to PCM

You need a DSD compatible program and DAC, WMP is not DSD compatible. You can set the option to embed the DSD as a DoP, WMP will play it to a DSD compatible dac only if it uses Aiso or WASAPI and does not touch the signal (which I am certain WMP cannot do also, try Foobar as a better player for DSD).

So can anyone sole the mystery how WMP was able to play DSD file although I set DSD setting "as it is"

Asset presents not just the main format but also LPCM offerings, WMP picks the LPCM option which will decode the DSD file to PCM.

So how do i force assett to just offer DSD

You would select 'as single', WMP would not play a dsf file though.

Asset configuration >> Advanced

where it lists the audio formats, set DSF and DFF at as single.
