CD Ripping Slow, and then Fast...?

I've been re-ripping my CD collection to FLAC using dBpoweramp CD Ripper - love the program so far - but I'm experiencing a 'problem' with ripping speed. It starts off at a crawling pace (x2-3) and continues at that speed for most of the ripping duration (by time). Then, somewhere between ~50-75% into the ripping process, it suddenly accelerates, finishing around x35. In addition to the very slow rip-speed, my whole computer is very laggy while it rips at x2-3 (then the PC is no longer laggy once it breaks through to higher speeds).

Is this normal? If not, is it a software or hardware problem?

I've checked that DMA mode is enabled on my drive/s and have tried ripping to Test Conversion (as suggested here). I'm sure the CDs I'm ripping are in mint condition. FYI, my (relevant) computer specs are:

    Intel i5, 3.4/3.8GHz
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-220L
    ASUS P8H77-M

I did a quick comparison between programs using the same album before:

    Using dBpoweramp CD Ripper
    Format: FLAC
    Total ripping time: 11m39s
Note: 'Acceleration' began between 50-75% of ripping progress.

    Using Windows Media Player
    Format: WAV
    Total ripping time: 4m10s
Note: 'Acceleration' began 20% into the first track after being slow for maybe 30 seconds or so.

    Any ideas?

I'm not the OP, but I have the exact same problem with this drive. It only rips at 1-2x to start with, sometimes not even accurately. Then it speeds up to about 10-20x after the first or second track and is fine (though still not as fast as I'd expect).

      Windows 7 SP1 32-bit
Nothing great in terms of motherboard or processor.

      Any ideas?

      Many thanks,
      David.

You have exactly the same cd drive?

Yes, that's what brought me to this thread. Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-220L ATA Device (according to device manager).

It is likely an issue between the drive and your system (on a physical hardware level).

As Spoon suggested, it may be a hardware level issue between drive and system. I've custom built a PC for ripping multiple CD's simultaneously and I'm using three LG 24X SATA Super-Multi DVD drives (GH24NS95B) and one Pioneer 15X Blu Ray drive (BDR-208BDK) and generally achieve fast ripping speeds while ripping four CD's simultaneously. When I have encountered ripping speed variations it has been on a per CD basis. Most CD's rip very fast all the way through. Some apparently pristine CD's just seem to rip slower for whatever reason. If you are experiencing slow ripping speeds on every CD you try to rip then it must be a system specific hardware related issue.

As a reference, my system consists of:
              ASUS P8Z77-VLX motherboard
Intel Core i5 Quad Core Processor
Corsair Force GS 128GB SSD drive
              Corsair XMS 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM

Anything I can do about that?

It's on all CDs. 2.5x, then 33x. Takes between half a track and half the disc to get up to speed. 8 second spin-up doesn't make any difference. Anything else I can try?

                Cheers,
                David.

Try changing your SATA controllers to IDE mode in the bios.

They were on standard IDE, changed them to legacy IDE. Windows re-installed drivers for everything, but still ripping at 2.5x. Got a stack of kid's story CDs, 10-20 minutes each, all ripping complete CDs at 2.5x. :(

btw, on the retail packaging the drive was called a Pioneer DVR-S20L.

Oh, and I really didn't expect customer support on Boxing Day - this really is beyond the call of duty!

                    Cheers,
                    David.

What CPU usage is there when ripping slowly?

Then it is likely the drive its self is doing this speed reduction, rather than the drive dropping to PIO mode (for a short time).

I stuck an older DVD-ROM drive in, and it did 13x then quickly sped up to 28x. Guess I'll have to buy another burner, because I don't have a spare SATA slot to install both in at once, and I'm not going to swap them every time I want to burn a disc vs rip one!

Thanks for ruling out all other options.

                            David.

I get the same slow start performance with the Matshita drive in my fairly new Dell. It stay's at about 2.5 for 60-80% and then speeds up . I'm using Burst mode for these.
