powerpack: CODEC could not be opened

    Hi,

we have been using the free music converter happily for quite some time, but it seems that our problem started when we installed the demo version of the power pack to try the mp3pro CLI converter. However, the powerpack said that the time had expired. (I am not sure about the timing, we might have installed the powerpack also at some earlier point, without really using it). Since then, not even the built-in Lame encoder works (de- and reinstallation of the program didn't help). This is under Windows 98 SE.

So we installed the music converter, the demo version of the power pack, and the Thomson mp3pro player on another computer, running Windows 2000. It worked fine until the trial period expired. Because we were pleased with the results, we registered the power pack, downloaded and installed the registered version (without deinstalling the trial version). However, we always get the error message
"The CODEC required to compress 'G:\mf.mp3' could not be opened."
This is the same type of message that we receive on the Windows 98 system.

Any ideas how to get back a workable dMC are appreciated.

    Cheers, Andy & Klaus

Uninstall everything dMC related. Then browse to and delete the folder 'dBpowerAMP' in C:\Program Files\Illustrate\, next:

    Start >> Run >> type:

    regedit.exe

    Browse to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Illustrate

    and delete the key dBpowerAMP

Reboot then install dMC and the power pack, and everything should be ok.

*** If you have my player installed backup your music collection first.

      Hi Spoon,

thank you for your quick help (and the nice programs). The solution to the problem is actually a little embarassing for us, as it reveals some dumb users...

We have tried cleaning up directories manually and registry after uninstallation of dBpoweramp and Thomson player BEFORE posting this cry for help. Anyway, as it turned out, my brother had currently only 24bit wav files on his computer, and that seemed to be the problem of the missing CODECs. As soon as we created some 16bit (or 8bit) wavs, things returned to normal.

      Thanks again,
      Andy & Klaus
