Under AlbumArtist, is there a way to change the albums from being sorted alphabetically and sort by year instead?

In the config for the browse tree, add an item "root" as a child to Album Artist and (optionally) tick "no track listing" for the latter. Then you can browse by Album Artist > (root) > Album by Release.
Alternatively you could browse by Dynamic Browsing (add Album Artist to the tree if it's not there by default). -
Or just change 'Root > Album Artist > Album' (the default) to 'Root > Album Artist > Album by Release'Comment

Yes I see now that the default has changed - my mind was probably a couple of versions back... Might be easier now to do as simbun suggests.
If you like you can try it both ways by adding both "Root" and "Album by Release" as children to Album Artist. Their browsing routes differ (flexible vs static).
Don't forget to restart Asset after configuring, as it's not automatic any longer I have noticed (windows version).Comment
