Can't Install Codec

I get an error message when trying to install a mp4 codec. the message is:
Error whilst running C:Program Files/Illustrate/dBpower AMP/Music Converter.exe How can I fix this error message.

Are you signed in as administrator when performing installations?

Which mp4 codec were you trying to install?
The m4a/mp4/Apple Lossless codec is the basic mp4 codec and is needed for the other mp4 codecs. The other mp4 codecs also require that other programs also be installed.
If you have installed dBpowerAMP Music Converter to some location other than the default location, you will need to customize the installation location for the mp4 codec also.
You may be running into problems if dBpowerAMP Music Converter and/or your codec are installed if you are not logged in with administrative priviledges under Windows.

If none of these items apply, could you tell us what Windows version you are using and which mp4 codec you are trying to install.

Yes I'm the administrator.The codec is going to the input folder.I'm running XP. The file associations are showing up, but won't convert the files.The files are downloaded from the iTunes store.They are w4p files.Are the codecs that I d/l'ed right for these files.I downloaded the Apple codecs.

So your problem is not with installing the codec, your problem is that you cannot convert your downloaded files from the iTunes store.

These files are m4p files. These files are not NORMAL mp4/m4a files (although they generically fit an mp4 container). These files are protected through DRM (Digital Rights Management) measures that are designed to thwart most attempts to transpose and copy them. There is information in the DRM and CD Copy Protect section of this forum on your options for dealing with these files. You might want to start with this link here:

Trying to change the file extension will NOT help you.

Note that JHymn does not work with iTunes 6 purchased songs.

A brief review:
Apple iTunes store has incorporated DRM measures in its files for downloading since (I believe) its inception. Various programs to allow users to remove these measures for legitimate purposes have spring up, the most popular of which was Hymn. As such programs have sprung up, Apple has replied with counter-measures to defeat such programs and incorporated these in later updates of iTunes.
In response, the author(s) of Hymn would come up with a new version to address the new counter-measures and Apple then would update iTunes to frustrate the new counter-counter-measures. Eventually Hymn gave way to jHymn as the original author(s) gave up the fight (as other similar programs had done much earlier).
The release of iTunes 6 was designed to counter jHymn and did so in a way that also prevented users from reverting to earlier versions of iTunes. The author(s) of jHymn claim(s) to be working on an update. (For more information to jHymn and iTunes see:

The only thing you can be sure of at this time are:
1. jHymn currently won't work unless you have an earlier version of iTunes;
2. When jHymn is updated to work with iTunes 6, Apple will come up with a newer iTunes to defeat that;
3. Short of using programs such as Hymn or jHymn, you are left with the options of recording your iTunes store songs as you play them off of your soundcard (either using dBpowerAMP Music Converter's Auxilary Input or one of a few programs designed to do this same thing), or burning your iTunes files to cd and re-ripping them.

make sure that the install path is correct. if you installed dmc to someplace other than default (like me :smile2: ) you have to deal with a small plugin installer issue.
by default the installer path is:
c:\program files\illustrate\dbpoweramp

when you change the dbpoweramp folder where you installed it, the installer path will show up as:
c:\program files\waytoomanyaudioprogz\illustrate\dbpoweramp\d bpoweramp

notice the 2 'dbpoweramp's in a row... :vmad: bad installer, so either select the illustrate folder (which will make the path correct when it adds 'dbpoweramp' to the end of the path) or just take the extra one off

this happened to me at first when i didnt notice it was installing to the wrong folder, hope this helps

Psh, companies and private competitors will always 1-up each other. I've got no worries or doubts of Jhymn's everlasting success against iCrap. (Sorry, I don't like iTunes, as you can see)

So, if the codec is going to the right folder what could the error message mean?
What would be the best way to convert iTune's files use the dBpowerAMP Music Converter's Auxilary Input or purchase something else online.

Well the error message may mean that you have not properly installed the m4a/mp4/Apple Lossless codec. There are 2 quick checks for this:
1. Right-click a music file (NOT one of your iTunes store files), preferably mp3 or wav, select Convert To and see if m4a is listed as a possible format for converting this file (if m4a is shown then it is save to assume the codec is installed properly):
2. Check your list of installed encoders (m4a(FAAC CLI) should be listed) and installed decoders (Mp4 Decoder should be listed) in DMC Configuration (Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration>dBpowerAMP Music Converter Configuration). (This is generally a better test than #1).

If the codec is not installed properly, check out gameplaya15143's post (#9) in this thread. This will not help with protected iTunes store purchased files but this is something you want to get straight. If that advice does not solve the issue (of proper installation without the error messasge), please post back. Do make sure that you are not using dBpowerAMP Music Converter at the same time you are trying to install a codec.

As far as the purchased iTunes store files go, the available programs for recording protected files all cost money and I do not know whether they are any easier than Auxilary Input. Being an economical person I would like to think I would use Auxilary Input (directions for which can be found in the FAQ section of the Forum for dBpowerAMP Music Converter). But also being a practical person, if I had a lot of files I would consider trying another program. I would probably consider Tunebite (others have recommended it) but there may also be other similar programs out there.

The error means that Music Converter is not installed, atleast where you are installing to.

I'm getting the message when I try to put the codecs in the player, not the converter. Do the same codecs work for either piece of software. I didn't realize this (converter part) until spoon posted. Sorry for the mislead if I caused one.

The dBpowerMAP player uses the same decoding codecs as the dBpowerAMP Music Converter. You also have to have the converter installed.
