Poor/incorrect dMC ID tags compared to iTunes

    Hi

I've been using iTunes to import CD's, and this has been working really well, but registered for dMC as it supports accurate rip and some other features that aren't essential, but for 8 quid why not.. Having fixed performance issues, although iTunes is still faster at ripping, I'm finding that some ID tags are missing whereas they're present with iTunes, giving greatly inferior results with dMC. I've tried the default Smart APE and V1 and V2 tags, and this makes no difference.

For example, a track that is ripped with iTunes has tags for title, artist, album, composer, track, year, genre, whereas with dMC the tags are just artist, title, album, genre and track. In this case, the composer incorrectly appears as the artist. Furthermore, iTunes has correctly identified the CD as a compilation, whereas dMC hasn't (or doesn't distinguish them specially), and the tag information itself is also better with iTunes. I realise that this is dependent on CDDB.

I've noticed this on a few CD's, and not just one.

Selecting extra information from CDDB does not return any other results, although I'm suspecting that the CD may be listed more than once, and iTunes is better at picking the best listing.

Any ideas? Have I missed some feature that gives better tag info? I'm sure that dMC has some good features, but right now iTunes is giving much better ripping results, and sad to report, dMC is a disappointment and offers no reason why it should be used.

One distinction is that dMC uses FreeDB and iTunes uses CDDB. CDDB is a commercially-run database, while FreeDB is run by the public, therefore leading to incorrect tags now and then.

      Hi

Thanks for the very quick reply, and you're right of course. I hadn't spotted that. Just ripping a CD now, iTunes showed two CDDB entires, both of which were poor this time and so I made a new submission. FreeDB was better on this one.

My wishlist would be optional support for both, with an easy interface to view at a glance the submissions from each DB and choice to pick which entry is used as the starting point for the tags, but with a better interface than how iTunes handles that. Would make track importing with accurate tags much quicker.

A problem with using both is that Spoon may need to apply for a licence so that dMC can access CDDB and part of that licence may prevent him from using FreeDB as well.

            >Actually, IIRC, part of the agreement to use CDDB is that you will not use any
            >other CD ID database (FreeDB). Hence the reason Spoon chose FreeDB.

That is a myth that has built up over time, the only condition is that CDDB data is not submitted to freedb, that is just to stop 1 program registering and copying the full database over, not individual cds.

Anyhow I tried to apply to cddb on 4 occasions, crappy company, they were really not interested - other than that they should fire their lazy regional managers....
