Why no AAC extension with m4a Nero (AAC)

I must be doing something stupid. In addition to my previous post, I am also simply trying to convert a .wav file to an .aac file (AACPlus, 48Kbps) using m4a Nero (AAC)

The extension on the output file is not .aac but .m4a. What am I doing wrong?

Please, how do I convert a .wav file into a file with a .aac extension? thanks

Re: Why no AAC extension with m4a Nero (AAC)

because .aac is the raw extension of Advanced Audio Coding with no tag as far as I know. The real container of the aac stream is .mp4 (both video and audio, Nero used this) and .m4a (Apple always used this for mpeg4 audio only so Nero for compatibility followed). You're not doing anything wrong
