Can someone recommend some "optimal" settings for ripping high-quality MP3s with moderate to high compression?
I'm particulary interested in the lowe/upper limits for bitrate (I use VBR) and the recommended lame version.
I realize much of this may be subjective, but I'm curious to get some feedback from experienced rippers.
Thanks!

Well here's your problem: high-quality versus moderate to high compression.
I personally prefer alt-preset extreme but this does not qualify in my eyes as moderate to high compression. If you want higher compression, I would recommend alt-preset standard. That's my opinion. Other user's viewpoints on this matter might aalso be helpful.

how i would encode it would depend on how small i want the mp3..
personally i like lame 3.90.3 ... the new ones just dont quite do it for me
~128kbps: -q 5 -V 9 --resample 44 --lowpass 19 --nspsytune
(i have a file encoded with that averaging 90kbps  )
~100kbps: -q 5 -V 9 --resample 44 --lowpass 16 --nspsytune
^^ these dont work with lame from v3.94 or higher
for lame 3.97...
~112kbps: -q 1 -V 8 --resample 44 --lowpass 16
~144kbps: -q 1 -V 4 --lowpass 19
*i use ogg vorbis, so these parameters are based on a few tests (quite a few actually), im curious how they work on more samples :smile2:
